Malcolm Bell and women's basketball senior
Morgan Jones were honored as the North Carolina Central University Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year during the annual NCCU Athletics awards ceremony, The Eddies, on Tuesday, May 2.
Bell, from Richmond, Virginia, was voted All-MEAC First Team as top quarterback in the league. He topped the MEAC with an average of 250.5 yards of total offense per game, was second in in the conference with 202.6 passing yards per game, and was the league's sixth-leading rusher with 575 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Bell collected a career record of 24-10 as the Eagles' starting quarterback (9-3 in 2016, 8-3 in 2015, 6-3 in 2014, 1-1 in 2013) with three consecutive conference championships. Among NCCU career leaders, he ranks second in passing with 6,340 yards, second in total offense with 7,844 yards, and 13th in rushing with 1,504 yards, while accounting for 62 total touchdowns - 20 rushing and 42 passing.
Jones, a native of Stockbridge, Georgia, was selected to the NCCSIA All-State First Team after leading the MEAC by shooting 83.0 percent from the free throw line and ranking fourth in points per game (13.8), fifth in steals per game (2.1) and fifth in made three-pointers per game (1.8). She scored in double figures in 23 of her 29 starts and averaged 16.1 points per game in league play. The two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree reached the 1,000-point plateau in her final season. In 113 career games for the maroon and gray, Jones amassed 1,047 points, 304 rebounds, 174 assists and 144 steals. She graduated NCCU as class valedictorian in December, boasting a 3.96 grade point average as a criminal justice major.
