CARY, N.C. – The Bethune-Cookman University softball team outscored host North Carolina Central University by 14 runs on its way to a 6-0 and 11-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division doubleheader victory Saturday afternoon at Thomas Brooks Park.
The Wildcats improved to 15-26 overall and 6-2 in the league while the Lady Eagles dipped to 8-24 on the season and 3-5 against conference competition.
The two teams will conclude the three-game series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
GAME ONE: Bethune-Cookman 6, N.C. Central 0
Senior pitcher Sabrina Anguiano tossed a two-hitter and she got plenty of run support from the top scoring offense in the league.
Anguiano had a perfect game going until senior pitching counterpart
Dominique Wilson hit a bloop single just over the reach of the second baseman with two outs in the top of the fourth. She limited NCCU to just one other hit in the seventh to record her first complete-game shutout of the season. Anguiano, who was the MEAC Pitcher of the Year in 2015, moved over .500 on the season at 8-7 with her scoreless performance that featured five strikeouts.
Sophomore pinch hitter
Janeen Reynolds had the only other hit for the Lady Eagles with a grounder past the pitcher and into the outfield in the seventh.
A one-out triple by junior Mariah Davis in the third led to the Wildcats first run. After adding an unearned run in the fourth, Bethune-Cookman used the long ball to pull away in the seventh. Senior Kaitlin Alamprese started the frame with a solo shot to center before junior Iesha Waters finished off the visitors scoring with a three-run blast over the left field fence.
Wilson (7-12) went the distance in the pitcher's circle for the Lady Eagles. She allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks. Wilson matched Anguiano with five K's.
GAME TWO: Bethune-Cookman 11, N.C. Central 3
A couple NCCU errors led to BCU's first two runs in the second. Freshman Ryan Jackson extended the lead to 3-nil in the third with a solo home run down the left field line. Jackson leads the MEAC with 10 home runs.
Senior
Jennifer Allison knocked in NCCU's first run in the fourth with a single. She knocked in pinch runner
Dalika Wallace after Wilson led off the frame with the first of her three hits in the contest.
However, Alamprese connected for her second home run of the day in the sixth that started a late explosion for the Wildcats. Alamprese hit her two-run shot to left, which was her fourth blast of the season. BCU tacked on six more runs in the seventh, featuring a three-run homer by Kailey Richards.
Junior pitcher
Lauren Sitterson, junior outfielder
Danyelle Noland and sophomore outfielder
Miriam Duen accounted for the other maroon and gray hits. Wilson capped her four-hit day with a double just over the third base bag that plated NCCU's final two runs.
Freshman Mariah Estrada (4-5) went the first six innings to earn the Bethune-Cookman victory, allowing just one run on six hits. Sitterson (1-7) suffered the loss by giving up 11 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits over the course of seven innings of work.
