DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore
Gabriel Cucalon picked up his team-high 11th singles win for host North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 non-conference dual loss to Davidson College on Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats swept doubles and won the other five singles matches to improve to 15-6 overall. The Eagles were unable to win for a fourth consecutive time, falling to 6-12 on the season.
Cucalon toppled a two-time Atlantic 10 First Team All-Conference honoree in junior Shamael Chaudhry by in a three-set battle. He won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 for his fourth straight triumph.
A native of Ecuador, Cucalon leads all men's tennis players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) in singles wins, with all 11 triumphs coming atop the Eagles lineup.
Freshman No. 2
Theofanis Kontopoulos tried to keep pace with Cucalon in the win column as he went three-set as well in his battle with junior David Hager. However, Hager squeaked out a 7-2 tiebreaker win in the final set to win the close affair by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 7-6.
No. 3 Alex Fries, No. 4 J.B. Gough, No. 5 Ricky Saad and No. 6 Thomas Mason all won in straight sets for the Wildcats. Davidson also swept doubles to take the initial lead.
NCCU will next host MEAC rival Florida A&M University on Friday at 3 p.m.
