DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore transfer
Sebastian Bromley netted the only team point for host North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 non-conference loss to Appalachian State University on Thursday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Mountaineers won their third straight match to move over .500 at 6-5 overall, while the Eagles suffered their third consecutive setback to dip to 2-9.
Sophomore
Gabriel Cucalon and freshman
Maksym Konovalov also won in the top doubles draw for the maroon and gray. Cucalon and Konovalov leveled their record together at 4-4 with a 6-3 triumph.
However, ASU won the other two doubles tilts by matching 6-1 scores to claim the first team point.
The Mountaineers then won the top four singles flights to clinch the team victory in straight sets.
The final two singles matches were the last to hit the court and both went to decisive supersets in the third because the team outcome had already been decided.
Bromley was inserted into the lineup at the sixth position after freshman No. 2
Theofanis Kontopoulos was scratched from singles due to injury. Bromley took advantage of his unexpected playing time with a victory. He was swept in the first set before rallying for the comeback win by a final score of 0-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6).
Freshman
Pablo Juez Torres also went to a superset at the fifth position in the Eagles' lineup, but he was eventually edged 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7).
NCCU next hits the road over Spring Break for a pair of matches in South Carolina against The Citadel (Tuesday, 5 PM) and Coastal Carolina (Thursday, 3 PM).
