GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three different Eagles won in both singles and doubles as the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team picked up a big 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division road win against archrival North Carolina A&T State University Thursday afternoon at the George C. Simkin Jr. Indoor Sports Pavilion at Barber Park.
Sophomore
Davide Callegari joined freshmen
Theofanis Kontopoulos and
Pablo Juez Torres for a pair of victories apiece in leading the Eagles to the road victory.
NCCU improved to 5-11 overall while leveling its league ledger at 1-1. It marked the first conference Southern Division win for the Eagles in two seasons. The Aggies remained winless at 0-12 and 0-2.
After winning doubles, sophomore
Gabriel Cucalon provided NCCU with its next point with a flawless singles win atop the Eagles lineup. The 6-0, 6-0 triumph over sophomore Nicolas Arduh kept Cucalon (9-7) undefeated against MEAC opposition in 2017 at 5-0.
Juez Torres (2-8) won his second straight match – 6-2, 6-3 – at No. 6 singles to pull the maroon and gray within one team point of victory before Callegari (7-9) secured the team triumph with a 6-3, 6-4 win on the third court.
Kontopoulos (9-6) kept pace with Cucalon for the team lead in singles wins by adding the Eagles final victory at No. 2 singles. Kontopoulos had to rally to eventually edge fellow freshman Adair Bartra by a tally of 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).
Callegari and Kontopoulos won their third straight doubles match to highlight the early play. The duo had a perfect 6-0 performance to improve to 8-3 as partners.
Juez Torres teamed up with sophomore
Sebastian Bromley to seal the doubles team point in favor of the Eagles with a 6-4 conquest at the third position in the lineup. The tandem leveled their record at 2-2.
NCCU returns home to host University of California, Riverside on Friday at Noon.
