BOX SCORE
DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore
Davide Callegari won both of his matches for host North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 non-conference loss to UNC Asheville on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improved to 7-9 overall and the Eagles dipped to 3-11.
Callegari netted his singles win on court three, knocking off senior Reid Dillon in three sets. Callegari (6-8) outlasted Dillon by a score of 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
Asheville won No. 1 and No. 3 singles in straight sets before senior Josh Swindler rallied past NCCU freshman
Theofanis Kontopoulos to clinch the team victory for the visitors. Swindler fought back to win by a 1-6, 7-5, 5-1 score, before the Bulldogs added two more straight-set triumphs in the bottom two matches to finish off the day.
Sophomore Henry Patten highlighted play for the victors, knocking off NCCU sophomore
Gabriel Cucalon. Patten – an All-Big South Conference First Team honoree last year – remained undefeated in his second season for the Bulldogs at 16-0.
Callegari and Kontopoulos partnered together for a 6-3 conquest in the middle doubles bout. The maroon and gray duo hold a 6-3 record.
However, UNC Asheville won the other two doubles battles by matching 6-3 scores to claim the first team point. Cucalon and freshman
Maksym Konovalov held a 3-2 lead over Patten and Swindler in the top doubles draw, but the All-BSC doubles team rallied to win the next four games.
NCCU next hosts fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference member Morgan State University on Thursday at 3 p.m.
