Lynsey Cover and junior
Jamie Rogers won both of their matches on Tuesday to lead the North Carolina Central University women's tennis team to a 5-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division victory over host Savannah State University.
NCCU (1-9 Overall) starts league play at 1-0 while Savannah State (0-15) remained winless in the conference at 0-2. The Lady Tigers forfeited No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles with only five players.
The Lady Eagles started the day by sweeping doubles. Rogers partnered with senior
Tamara Jeremic for a 6-3 conquest on court one while Cover teamed up with sophomore
Jasmine Gabriel for a 6-2 triumph on the second court.
Cover and Gabriel have leveled their record together at 3-3.
Rogers and Cover each won their second match of the season by only losing four games apiece to SSU. Rogers did it atop the lineup, winning 6-4, 6-0, while Cover did so at No. 4 by a 6-3, 6-1 margin.
Freshman
Emily Pena clinched the team victory for the visitors with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win at the fifth slot in the Lady Eagles' lineup. It also marked the second win of the season for Pena.
Sophomore No. 2 Rachida El Kateb and freshman No. 3 Lili-Morgan Pastore won in straight sets to prevent the Lady Tigers from being shutout for a 12th time this season.
NCCU continues MEAC play at defending champion South Carolina State University on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
