Sebastian Bromley both netted their first dual-match singles wins at North Carolina Central University in helping the Eagles secure a 5-2 road win at Howard University on Saturday afternoon.
NCCU's top three players in sophomore
Gabriel Cucalon, freshman
Theofanis Kontopoulos and sophomore
Davide Callegari all won their third straight singles matches during the three-match, two-day northern road trip.
The Eagles are now 2-0 against fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member institutions on the season. NCCU is 2-6 overall, but the triumph does not count as league wins because Coppin State University and Howard are in the Northern Division and the Eagles compete in the Southern Division.
The Bison held the early 1-nil lead after winning doubles on courts one and three. Callegari and Kontopoulos did win on the middle court for NCCU by a 6-4 margin. The duo remained undefeated on the season at 3-0 as partners.
Cucalon, who boasts a 5-3 singles record atop the Eagles lineup, secured another impressive win. Cucalon rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 triumph of Howard senior Ismael Kaouache, who is a two-time All-MEAC honoree.
Kontopoulos kept pace with Cucalon at 5-3 overall with his 6-2, 7-5 defeat of senior William Jones III. Callegari (4-4) leveled his record to .500 with an easy 6-0, 6-1 conquest of another Bison senior in Laguna Foster Jr.
Bromley, a transfer from Chicago State University, sealed his first win in a maroon and gray uniform with a 6-4, 6-2 disposal of Spencer Kelly.
Konovalov had to work a little harder to secure his first collegiate victory after dropping his first set to Karim Shokeir. However, Konovalov rallied to win in a superset by a score of 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6).
NCCU will next begin MEAC Southern Division play by hosting defending league champions South Carolina State University on Friday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
