NCCU Splits Pair of 4-3 Showdowns in Maryland

Coppin State Box Score;
Loyola Maryland Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – The doubles tandem of sophomore Davide Callegari and freshman Theofanis Kontopoulos won both of their matches together and were undefeated in singles play as the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team first knocked off Coppin State University and then lost to Loyola University Maryland by matching 4-3 scores Friday.

Sophomore Gabriel Cucalon also won both of his singles matches as the upper half of the Eagles lineup won all of their matches on the busy day. NCCU (1-6 Overall) got into the win column for the first time and will conclude a three-match road swing with a battle at Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Saturday at Noon.

FIRST MATCH: N.C. Central 4, Coppin State 3

The NCCU Eagles rolled to the victory, winning the first four points before the Coppin State Eagles won a trio of shortened third sets to settle for the one-point team loss.

NCCU dominated doubles, taking all three courts by matching 6-2 scores. Callegari and Kontopoulos won in the middle bout. Cucalon partnered with sophomore Maksym Konovalov for the win in the top draw while the duo of sophomore Sebastian Bromley and freshman Pablo Juez Torres netted their first win together.

Cucalon (6-0, 6-1), Kontopoulos (6-1, 6-4) and Callegari (6-0, 6-1) all won in straight sets to seal the team victory.

NCCU also led the bottom three singles matches after the first set by Konovalov on court four, Campbell on court five and senior Dillon Strepay on court five. However, Coppin State won the second set in all three of those seesaw affairs. The players all then played superset races to 10 points in the third with CSU once again squeaking out the win each time.

Coppin State (0-2) was playing just its second match of the season.

SECOND MATCH: Loyola Maryland 4, N.C. Central 3

The Eagles fell behind after doubles, but three more straight-set victories by Cucalon (6-3, 6-2), Kontopoulos (7-6, 6-4) and Callegari (6-4, 6-4) catapulted NCCU into the lead at 3-2. However, the Greyhounds were able to win the final two matches of the day to rally for the team conquest.

With the score deadlocked 3-3, the match came down to the final singles match and freshman Matt Fitzmaurice was able to outlast fellow rookie in NCCU's Brooks Campbell in a three-set marathon by a score of 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.

Loyola Maryland (3-2) moved back over .500 win the win.

Callegari and Kontopoulos were playing together for the first time Friday and they moved to 2-0 as partners with a 6-4 win in NCCU's lone doubles victory.
