N.C. Central Women's Basketball
The Lady Eagles have strung together three consecutive wins after picking up a pair of home victories over South Carolina State University, 52-41, and Florida A&M University last week. NCCU (6-17 Overall, 5-6 MEAC) secured its first road win of the season to start the win streak, defeating Coppin State University 58-46.
During the streak, senior
Morgan Jones is averaging 18 points and 3.3 steals per game. Jones, who was named the Madness MEAC Player of the Week last week, is averaging 12.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.8 assists per game on the season. She is the league's top free throw shooter at 82.3% and ranks in the top 10 of the conference in points, steals and made 3-pointers.
Other top contributors during the streak include sophomore
Dominique Adams (11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds), freshman
Jada Blow (9.0 points) and freshman
Paulina Afriyie (9.0 rebounds). Adams and sophomore
Deja McCain both average over six points per game while Blow and sophomore
Rodneysha Martin are both bucketing an average of 5.6 points per contest. McCain is NCCU's top rebounder at 5.6 and is followed by Afriyie at 4.5.
Martin scored a career-high 25 points while Jones and Adams both added double-digit points in NCCU's 68-59 home win over Maryland Eastern Shore on Jan. 11. Jones, who scored 16 points in that contest, also netted 16 points and made five steals in a 73-50 home loss to Howard on Jan. 23.
Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Basketball
The Hawks have lost their last three games, including a 61-33 setback to league-leading Bethune-Cookman in their last contest. Maryland Eastern Shore (9-13 Overall, 3-8 MEAC) is just 2-8 since sophomore Ciani Byrom, who leads the Hawks in points and assists, went out due to injury.
Junior guard Moengaroa Subritzky has earned All-MEAC postseason honors each of her first two seasons, including First Team All-MEAC last year. She has continued her stellar paly with 8.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Senior Mariah McCoy is the Hawks' active scoring leader with 10.1 points per game and is followed closely by sophomore Keyera Eaton (9.9 points).
McCoy and Subritzky posted 13 and 10 points, respectively, in their loss at NCCU last month.
Howard Women's Basketball
The Bison were nipped, 73-72, by Morgan State University last Monday to drop under .500 on the year. Howard (11-12 Overall, 7-4 MEAC) is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings and will host one of the teams it is tied with in North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday before hosting the Lady Eagles.
Senior Te'Shya Heslip has been a key to Howard's success with 15.0 points, 5.0 assists and 3.8 steals per game. She ranks third in the MEAC in both assists and steals while ranking third in scoring.
Senior Sydni Johnson (12.2 points, 4.5 rebounds), junior Erin Blaine (9.9 points, 5.8 rebounds) and freshman Imani Bryant (6.4 points, 7.5 rebounds) gives the Bison depth on both sides of the court. Freshman Sarah Edmond is averaging 7.8 points and 4.0 assists in February to earn MEAC Rookie of the Week the past two weeks.
Johnson swished 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds in Howard's win over NCCU last month. Blaine added 10 points and six rebounds while Heslip finished with seven points and five assists.
