FINAL RESULTS/BRACKETS
DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University senior
Jamie Rogers advanced to the finals of the Maroon Flight and won a consolation doubles match to finish with four total wins at the third annual NCCU Invitational that concluded play Friday.
Rogers started off her day with a 6-2 doubles win partnered with freshman
Polina Sakharova. The maroon and gray duo knocked off Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) rivals Khalia Powell and Renata Radadan of North Carolina A&T State University.
Charlotte's tandem of Megan Smith and Rocio Safont clinched the big doubles draw with a victory over UNCW.
Rogers edged Smith in the semifinals of the Maroon Flight by narrow matching scores of 7-5. Rogers lost the flight's title match to Safont by a 6-0, 6-2 margin.
Sakharova and fellow freshman
Maru Berghaus also participated in semifinals matches after winning their opening matches on Thursday. Sakharova was eliminated 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the Gray Flight by Charlotte's Gabriela Gonzalez. Berghaus won her first set in the White Flight but Campbell University's Huda McGraw rallied for the 2-6, 6-0, 10-7 victory.
Safont won the Maroon Flight and Campbell's Lea Cutura secured the Gray Flight championship. The White Flight did not have a title match with two Campbell players in McGraw and Pauline Roustan advancing to the finals.
The undefeated Camels players from the White Flight were given a couple extra pro-set matches against NCCU players being that bracket was not completed. Roustan stayed perfect in singles action with an 8-1 victory over Berghaus. Sakharova doubled up McGraw, 8-4, to match Rogers with four total wins in the tournament for NCCU.
The three Lady Eagles went a combined 7-5 over the two-day event.
