SAVANNAH, Ga. – Freshman outside hitter
Christine Alcox ripped a kill on match-point to finish off her first collegiate double-double and complete a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division road win for the North Carolina Central University volleyball team over Savannah State University Monday evening.
Alcox blasted 10 kills and totaled season-high marks of 11 digs and five aces as the Lady Eagles prevailed 25-18, 25-14, 25-18. NCCU improved to 3-15 overall and 3-3 in the conference after completing the season series sweep of the Lady Tigers. Savannah State fell to 3-19 and 1-5.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Alcox had her best hitting performance of her rookie season with 10 kills on 19 swings with just four errors for a .316 hitting percentage. The Carrboro, North Carolina, product finished with a match-high 15.5 points, including five aces and one block assist.
Classmate
Da'Nesha Miller played in front of numerous fans that made the short trip from Hilton Head, South Carolina, to watch her play. Miller delivered 10 kills for her friends and family, which matched Alcox for match-high honors.
Junior
Whitney White added six kills and five block assists as NCCU posted a .228 team hitting percentage.
Senior setter
Paige Phillips contributed 30 assists and junior libero
Bree Simmons collected 10 digs.
SAVANNAH STATE HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Freshman libero Leiri Melendez led all players with 13 digs. Fellow rookie hitter Amanda Rullan Vilanova topped SSU's attack with seven kills.
SET-BY-SET:
1ST: NCCU posted a seven-point win with Alcox the Lady Eagles with 9.5 points. Savannah State led 8-7 when Alcox pushed the visitors ahead with a kill and two consecutive aces. Alcox finished with five kills, four aces and one block assist and NCCU hit .333 in the opener.
2ND: The Lady Eagles scored the first four points and flew out to an 11-2 advantage in rolling to the 11-point conquest. Fans witnessed a pair of kills by both Alcox and Miller in the early run. NCCU maintained a comfortable cushion as the Lady Tigers hit negative in the set. Miller paced the maroon and gray with four kills in the game.
3RD: The tightest set featured seven ties and three lead changes. NCCU broke free from an 11-all tie with four straight points. White was involved in a pair of blocks during that surge. That started a 12-3 knockout blow before the Lady Eagles completed the sweep with another seven-point win.
