GREENSBORO, N.C. – Junior middle blocker
Whitney White reached double digit points for the visiting North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss at North Carolina A&T State University on Friday evening in Moore Gymnasium.
The Aggies hit .257 in posting the 25-20, 26-24, 25-16 victory. North Carolina A&T (12-11 Overall, 4-2 MEAC) completed the season sweep of the Lady Eagles with the triumph. NCCU (3-16, 3-4) dipped below .500 in the league.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
White totaled 10.5 points with nine kills, one solo block and one block assist. The Lady Eagles only hit .105 despite a team-best .300 hitting percentage from the New Boston, Virginia, product
Freshman
Christine Alcox also tallied nine kills. The reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week came up one spike shy of a double-double after leading NCCU with 12 digs.
Junior
Erika Ianovale chipped in six kills and freshman
Da'Nesha Miller totaled five kills and three block assists. Senior setter
Paige Phillips notched a match-high 29 assists and came up with eight digs.
NORTH CAROLINA A&T HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Freshman Courteney Pitt led all players with 11 kills. The hot-hitting Aggie attack also included nine kills from her older sister in senior Alyssa Pitts. Senior Samara Brown was a third NCAT player to reach 10-plus points.
SET-BY-SET:
1ST: NCCU scored the first three points, including an ace by Phillips, and continued to led for the early stages. The Aggies catapulted ahead with a 5-0 run to lead 12-9. The Lady Eagles closed the deficit to two points on five occasions, but could not get any closer as NCAT prevailed by five.
2ND: The tight affair featured 10 ties and five lead changes. White had six kills in the set, including one that gave NCCU its last lead at 21-20. Courteney Pitt matched White with six kills in the game and she had two down the stretch that helped the Aggies secure the extend 26-24 win.
3RD: A kill by Alcox had the visitors up 11-10 before four consecutive Aggie points propelled the hosts in front for good. NCAT extended its advantage to 19-13, but NCCU never gave up and a couple Ianovale kills sandwiched around a spike by Miller sliced the margin in half. However, North Carolina A&T scored the next six points to complete the sweep with a nine-point set win.
