DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Junior
Whitney White ripped 10 kills and senior
Paige Phillips recorded a double-double to pace the North Carolina Central University volleyball team in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Southern Division road loss at Bethune-Cookman Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats got double-doubles from freshman Jordan Jefferson and senior Alondra Bautista to pull away with the 25-19, 25-16, 25-18 triumph. Bethune-Cookman leveled its overall record at 8-8 and remained the lone undefeated in the MEAC Southern Division at 5-0. NCCU dropped to 2-15 on the season and 2-3 in the league.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
White hit .381 as she blasted 10 kills on 21 swings with just two errors. The freshman duo of
Christine Alcox and
Da'Nesha Miller followed White with six kills apiece.
Phillips notched her fifth double-double on the strength of team-high totals of 22 assists and 15 digs. Junior libero
Bree Simmons chipped in 14 digs and NCCU's only two aces.
BETHUNE-COOKMAN HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
The Wildcats posted a .258 hitting percentage with Jefferson and Bautista topping the squad with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. They completed their double-doubles as Bautista made 14 digs and Jefferson lifted up 12 digs.
Senior setter Phalen Clark totaled 39 assists and libero classmate Rechez Lindsay supplied 18 digs.
SET-BY-SET:
1ST: Miller's second kill gave NCCU an early 4-3 edge. Bethune-Cookman followed with a 6-1 run to slingshot ahead for good. A 4-0 rally by the Lady Eagles that was capped by a Daye kill inched the visitors within three at 21-18 before the Wildcats won four of the next five serves to close out the six-point win.
2ND: BCU hit over .300 for a second straight set and never trailed. The hosts broke a 4-all tie with a 7-1 run to pull ahead 11-5. White kept NCCU within striking distance with six kills, but the Wildcats still prevailed by nine.
3RD: The Wildcats started the final frame on a 4-0 run and they never relinquished the lead. NCCU closed the deficit to two points at 19-17 after a kill by freshman
Erika Ianovale, but Bethune-Cookman closed out the match on a 6-1 surge.
