TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior middle blocker
Jazmine Daye led visiting North Carolina Central University with eight points in a 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) loss at Florida A&M University on Friday.
The Rattlers hit a staggering .434 on the way to posting the 25-13, 25-15, 25-11 victory. FAMU improved to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in the MEAC. The Lady Eagles slipped to 2-14 on the season and 2-2 in the league.
NCCU HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Daye spiked down six kills and provided NCCU with two solo blocks.
Freshman
Da'Nesha Miller matched Daye with six kills and made a team-high seven digs. Junior
Whitney White chipped in four kills and three blocks (two solo, one assist).
Senior setter
Paige Phillips totaled 14 assists.
FLORIDA A&M HIGHLIGHTS & STATS:
Freshman middle blocker Candelaria Herrera had a big match for the Rattlers. She blasted 12 kills on only 14 attempts with just one error for a .786 hitting percentage. Sophomore Nicole Abreu and junior Nair Canessa added nine kills apiece.
Senior setter Valeria Lopez orchestrated the hot-hitting Rattler attack with 27 assists.
SET-BY-SET:
1ST: A couple early kills by Daye helped keep the score close early at 5-5 before FAMU scored five consecutive points to double up the visitors, 10-5. The Rattlers connected for 16 kills in the period to win by 12.
2ND: Florida A&M never trailed and jumped out to a 10-2 advantage. NCCU kept fighting and a 6-0 run that included two straight aces by junior
Bree Simmons. However, the Rattlers outscored the Lady Eagles, 15-7, from that point to win by double digit points again.
3RD: The hosts logged a .667 hitting percentage in coasting to the most lopsided set of the three and complete the sweep. NCCU did lead by one point three times early and a kill and a block by White had the scored leveled at 6-6 before FAMU closed out the match on a 19-5 surge.
