GREENVILLE, N.C. – After suffering a 7-0 loss in its season opener to host East Carolina University on Friday, the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team had a much closer contest Saturday in a 5-2 loss to Presbyterian College at the ECU Indoor Tennis Facility.

The Eagles start the season 0-1 while the Pirates and Blue Hose both begin the year in the win column.

Sophomore Gabriel Cucalon was in a pair of tight battles in NCCU's loss to ECU on Friday. The Guayaquil, Ecuador, resident won the first set in his top-flight tilt before falling to junior transfer Freddie McGeehan by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Cucalon and freshman Theofanis Kontopoulos forced a tiebreaker in their doubles match, but were swept to fall 7-6 (6-0).

It would be Cucalon and Kontopoulos that would provide the Eagles with their first two points a day later.

Cucalon once again found himself in a three-set affair at No. 1 singles, but this time he was able to come up with the victory. He lost his first set and was trailing 3-0 in the second set before rallying for the impressive 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4 comeback win.

Kontopoulos picked up his first collegiate win at No. 2. The Corinthos, Greece, native garnered his triumph in convincing fashion, only losing three games before prevailing 6-1, 6-2.

Presbyterian picked up the doubles point and then won the bottom four singles matches in straight sets to claim the team victory.

Sophomore Sebastian Bromley and freshmen Maksym Konovalov and Brooks Campbell joined Kontopoulos in their first matches representing the maroon and gray on the weekend.

NCCU will make its home debut against the College of Charleston on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 3:30 p.m.
