DURHAM, N.C. – Sophomore guard
Rodneysha Martin scored a career-high 25 points in leading the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win for a second straight day as the Lady Eagles knock off University of Maryland Eastern Shore, 68-59, Wednesday afternoon in McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Martin had a hot hand as she went 6-for-9 from the field (66.7%) and 11-of-12 from the free throw line (91.7%) in producing her 25 points.
Martin nailed a pair of free throws with two seconds left in the third quarter to put the Lady Eagles up 45-44. The Hawks were able to tie the score for the 12th and last time early in the fourth quarter before a baseline jumper by sophomore
Dominique Adams put NCCU ahead for good, 49-47, with 7:34 left.
That hoop by Adams started a decisive 12-0 run that featured scoring by five different Lady Eagles.
NCCU made 78.6-percent (22 of 28) of its free throws to secure the win, including an impressive 11-of-12 precision (91.7%) in the final quarter.
The Lady Eagles (3-11 Overall) start MEAC play 2-0 for the first time since joining the league in 2011-12. Maryland Eastern Shore slipped to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in conference competition.
Senior
Morgan Jones continued her consistent play with her seventh consecutive double-digit scoring game with 16 points (10th of the season). She also provided three assists and two steals.
Sophomore
Dominique Adams bucketed 13 points. Classmate
Deja McCain tallied seven points, a game-high seven rebounds and a career-high five steals. Senior
Chantal Thomas, who scored five points, orchestrated NCCU's offense with six assists.
NCCU shot a season-high 45.5-percent (20 of 44) from the floor, including a staggering 54.5% (6 of 11) from beyond the arc. Martin, Jones and Adams all swished a pair of 3-pointers.
The Shore had three scorers in double figures with senior Mariah McCoy leading the group with 13 points. Juniors Victoria Morris and Moengaroa Subritzky chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively.
NCCU will play its first MEAC road game at Norfolk State University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
