NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month: James Dey

Baseball Senior Bats .303 in May and Graduates with 3.85 Overall GPA


DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball senior James Dey has been named the NCCU Student-Athlete of the Month for May 2016 in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
 
A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Dey recorded a .303 batting average with 10 hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in during the fifth month. In three games at the MEAC Baseball Championship, he hit 7-for-13 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Dey finished his senior season with the team's second-highest batting average of .329, along with 56 hits, 26 RBI, 21 runs scored, seven doubles and five home runs. He started 45 games for the Eagles, including 36 as a designated hitter and nine as a catcher. Dey also made 14 appearances as a relief pitcher, racking up 26 strikeouts in 18.0 innings of work.
 
During the spring semester in the classroom, Dey accomplished a perfect 4.0 grade point average to increase his final overall GPA to 3.85. He graduated from NCCU on May 14 with a degree in history.
 
On June 3, Dey became the first NCCU male student-athlete to be named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® First Team.
