Kert Kilumets won his fourth consecutive match and the freshman duo of
Gabriel Cucalon and
Davide Callegari were both victorious for a third straight time in leading the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team to a 5-4 non-conference victory over host Virginia State University late Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles triumph was their second win of the day after first topping Hampton University, 4-3, earlier Saturday and their third one-point win in two days after topping Averett University, 4-3, Friday. NCCU increased its record to 4-12 overall.
NCCU's rookies dominated their matches, losing just one game apiece in their conquests. Cucalon improved his team-best singles record to 9-7 with his 6-0, 6-1 success in the second slot in the lineup. Callegari won by the same identical score one court over to inch closer to .500 at 7-9.
Kilumets was challenged a little more but he was still able to dispose of his top-tier foe by a 6-2, 6-1 score. Kilumets matches Callegari with a 7-9 singles ledger.
Junior
Dillon Strepay, a walk-on who just started playing tennis at the beginning of the calendar year, had his best singles result for the Eagles yet in a 6-1, 6-1 loss on court five.
VSU (7-2) picked up its other three points from two forfeits and one retirement.
The Maroon and Gray first got on the board with a pair of doubles wins. Cucalon and Callegari coasted to an 8-1 victory at No. 1. Kilumets and senior
Thomas Persico notched the other doubles point at No. 2 with an 8-5 rally. Both Eagle tandems tallied their fifth doubles wins together.
NCCU will conclude its season with a Senior Day home match against Shaw University on Friday at 1 p.m.
