Elon Comes up Big in Middle Innings to Down Eagles

ELON, N.C. – Two big innings turned the tide of the game as Elon University rallied past North Carolina Central University for a 9-4 win at Latham Park on Tuesday, April 26.

Just like the last three games for NCCU (21-23), the Eagles scored first as Trevor Theissen (Franklin, Wisc.) drove in Bryant Battle (Greensboro, N.C.) in the top of the third to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

Elon (20-22) broke the game open in the middle innings when the Phoenix sent eight batters to the plate in the fourth for four runs, then batted around for five runs in the fifth to take an 8-2 lead.

Battle put a run on the board for the Eagles in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly, but he also kept a few runs off the board in the bottom of the sixth.  Elon had runners on first and second with one down in the frame as the next man stepped up and drove a ball deep to left field.

Battle tracked back and made a leaping grab as he collided with the fence, and both Phoenix runners had overrun their marks expecting the ball to drop for a hit.  The throw was relayed from left field back to second base for the force out to end the inning without a run.

The Eagles were able to pick up a few runs late with an RBI walk from Ellington Hopkins (Lansing, N.Y.) in the top of the seventh, and back-to-back hits in the eighth culminated in Thomas Prospero (Batavia, N.Y.) driving in Zachary Marszal (Cary, Ill.).

James Dey (Charlotte, N.C.) helped improve his team-leading batting average as he went 3-for-4, but the top hitter was Liam O'Regan (Middletown, R.I.) who came a home run shy of the cycle going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

NCCU returns home to the Durham Athletic Park on Wednesday, April 27 to host crosstown rival Duke University, with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.  That game as well as the rest of the remaining home games will be free to enter, and will be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com.  Live Twitter updates can also be found by following @NCCUAthletics.
