Davide Callegari and
Gabriel Cucalon both won in singles and doubles for host North Carolina Central University in a 4-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss to rival North Carolina A&T State University late Friday afternoon at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Aggies improved to 2-9 overall and started league play 1-0. The Eagles remained winless on the season at 0-6 and 0-1.
North Carolina A&T jumped out to a 2-0 lead before singles wins by sophomore
Kert Kilumets and the Eagles freshmen to put the hosts ahead 3-2. However, the Aggies were able to win the final two matches at the fourth and fifth positions in the lineup to escape with the team victory.
Cucalon and Callegari dominated their top doubles match by a 6-1 margin, which marked their first doubles win together in their rookie season. NCCU forfeited No. 3 doubles and N.C. A&T claimed the first team point with a 6-4 triumph in the middle doubles match.
The Aggies score increased to 2-nil with a forfeit win in the sixth scheduled singles match.
Kilumets started the NCCU comeback with a 6-0, 6-1 dismantling in the marquee draw atop the lineup. The conquest also marked the first singles win for the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Year.
Cucalon was next to finish by netting a 6-1, 6-4 win that deadlocked the team score. Callegari followed moments later, losing the same number of games in a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Cucalon leveled his singles record at 3-3 while Callegari improved to 2-4.
Sophomore John Wilson IV swept his No. 5 singles match and classmate Dreshaun Jarmon won the decisive No. 4 singles match 6-1, 6-4 for the visitors.
NCCU continues its homestand with a non-conference match against North Dakota State University on Saturday at Noon.
