Gabriel Cucalon won his fourth consecutive match for visiting North Carolina Central University in a 6-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss at Florida A&M University on Sunday afternoon.
Cucalon is a perfect 2-0 in MEAC Southern Division matches and leads the Eagles with a 6-3 singles record.
However, the freshman from Guayaquil, Ecuador, had to work hard for his fourth straight triumph.
Cucalon found himself trailing 9-6 in a third-set superset and one point away from losing his No. 2 singles match when he won rallied with five straight points, including surviving three consecutive FAMU match point chances. Cucalon prevailed by a final score of 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Two other Eagles lost in superset tiebreakers after the match was already clinched by the Rattlers.
Sophomore
Kert Kilumets was edged atop the lineup by a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 margin and freshman
Davide Callegari was held off by a 6-0, 6-7, 10-2 score.
FAMU (5-8 Overall, 1-0 MEAC) started league play with a win after winning doubles and clinching three singles points in the lower half of its singles lineup.
NCCU (1-8, 0-2) will continue its Florida swing at MEAC foe Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach on Tuesday.
