Eagles Swept by No. 1 North Carolina

Box Score

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked Tar Heels remained undefeated on the season as the University of North Carolina posted a 7-0 victory over visiting North Carolina Central University at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center Monday night.

The Eagles were able to win games in their top four singles matches but North Carolina – ranked No. 1 in the current Oracle/ITA Men's Tennis National Rankings – won every contest in straight sets.

The Tar Heels boast a 14-0 overall record after the match and NCCU is 0-5.

The young Eagles got to face some of the nation's best tennis players with sophomore Kert Kilumets and freshman Gabriel Cucalon both competing against nationally ranked singles players. Kilumets lost 6-0, 6-1 to 10th-ranked junior Ronnie Schneider, who is a two-time First Team All-ACC honoree. Cucalon was defeated by 23rd-ranked senior Brett Clark by a 6-4, 6-0 score.

Freshman Davide Callegari and senior Thomas Persico had NCCU's closest matches. Senior Stuart DePaulo edged Callegari on court three by matching 6-2 set scores and freshman Arturo Schmidt held off Persico on court four by a 6-3, 6-2 margin.

Junior Dillon Strepay also played for the Maroon and Gray but he was swept in his fifth singles tilt.

Cucalon and Callegari had their biggest doubles test of their rookie season to date in a 6-1 loss to the No. 4 nationally ranked doubles team of Clark and sophomore Robert Kelly.

The Eagles return home for three matches at the NCCU Tennis Courts this weekend, including MEAC rival North Carolina A&T on Friday at 3 p.m., South Dakota State University on Saturday at Noon, and Howard University on Sunday at 1 p.m.
