The Lady Eagles suffered a pair of 31-point road losses last week at Campbell University (61-30) and Old Dominion University (83-52). NCCU (1-4 Overall) is 1-1 at home and will try and build on its impressive 37-point triumph over Johnson & Wales University last time playing inside McDougald-McLendon Arena.
Freshman
Jada Blow had a breakout performance against the Lady Monarchs last Sunday, pouring in 28 points, including five 3-pointers, and providing four rebounds, four assists and two steals. She leads the Lady Eagles with 11.6 points, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Blow, who is from Chicago, Illinois, was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week on Monday. She is the second straight NCCU newcomer to win that award this season with forward
Erin Houser securing that same prestige one week earlier.
NCCU has four other players averaging over six points, three rebounds and one steal per game in senior
Morgan Jones (9.4 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.2 spg), Houser (6.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.0 spg), sophomore
Dominique Adams (6.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.4 spg) and sophomore
Deja McCain (6.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.2 spg).
The Lady Eagles have posted double-digit steals in three of five games and is maintaining positive rebounding margin on the season. However, NCCU is shooting just 27.8-percent from the floor, which is worse than the squad is shooting from three-point distance (28.6%). The Lady Eagles have only shot over 30-percent once this season, their only win.
NCCU was held to 22.2-percent shooting in a 60-37 road loss to Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina, last season. Senior
Chantal Thomas scored a team-high 10 points and made three steals while McCain chipped in seven points and seven rebounds. Jones did not play in that contest.
Wofford Women's Basketball
The Terriers played a nationally ranked opponent in its last outing, losing to #19 University of Florida 74-51 in Ocala, Florida, on Wednesday. Wofford (3-3 Overall) is a perfect 3-0 at home, but is still searching for its first road win at 0-3.
Senior guard Kentra Washington and sophomore guard Chloe Wanink are both averaging 11.3 points per game for the Terriers. Washington, who led Wofford in scoring last season as well, also paces the Terriers with 5.8 rebounds per game. Wanink has a hot hand from behind the arc, making nearly half of her attempts (11 for 23 for 47.8%).
Wofford is shooting a solid 42.6-percent with good ball distribution, leading the Southern Conference (SoCon) in assists. The Terriers loaded perimeter also features senior Sarah Traynor, who sets the table for Wofford with 4.5 assists per contest. Traynor scores six points per game and there are four other Terriers that net seven points per game.
Wofford is 4-1 against NCCU and the two teams are meeting for the sixth consecutive season. Senior forward Grayson Pinholster, who is tallying an average of 7.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season, had a double-double in last year's 23-point win over the Lady Eagles. Pinholster had game-high marks of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Wanink also reached double-digit scoring for the Terriers with 12 points.
