#NCCUWBB Visits Defending MEAC Tourney Champs Monday


DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team will try and knock off the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament champions and move back to .500 in the league when the Lady Eagles battle at Savannah State University on Monday at 6 p.m.
 
Fans who cannot attend the game in the Tiger Arena, can listen to the MEAC showdown on the NCCU Sports Network, with Jonathan Duren on the air for the play-by-play. Pay-per-view video and free live stats will also be provided by Savannah State.

NCCU (2-11, 1-2) was unable to stay perfect in 2016 after a late comeback try fell short in a 58-51 road loss at South Carolina State on Saturday. The Lady Eagles are winless on the road at 0-9. NCCU was held under 30-percent shooting from the field for the fifth time despite making a season-high eight 3-pointers. Senior Tisha Dixon and junior Morgan Jones carry most of the scoring load for the Lady Eagles, averaging 10.7 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. Senior Kristin Askew, who is shooting treys at a precise 40-percent clip, has scored in double figures in four straight games and averages 7.0 points per game. Dixon grabs a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game and Jones paces the Lady Eagles with 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per contest.
 
SSU (3-10, 0-2) is one of three winless teams in the MEAC after losing to FAMU (59-38) and NCAT (69-59). The defending MEAC Tournament champions have struggled in the first half of this season as the conference's lowest scoring team at just 49.1 points per game. The Lady Tigers, who are 2-3 at home (both wins against non-DI competition), have won five straight against NCCU. A trio of juniors are Savannah State's top scorers in guard Kenyata Hendrix (10.9 ppg), forward Jeremica Edwards (7.0) and guard Chelsea Frazier (6.4). Protecting the ball make be key in Monday's matchup with both clubs averaging over 20 turnovers per game.
