2015 NCCU Football Season Preview:

A strong sense of optimism surrounds North Carolina Central University heading into the 2015 football campaign. Fifteen starters return from a team that captured a share of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference championship and posted the most wins as a Division I-FCS program a year ago.

In 2014, under the leadership of rookie head coach Jerry Mack, NCCU posted seven victories, including the program's first win over a nationally-ranked FCS opponent.

With a season as head mentor under his belt, Mack exudes confidence about the direction of the NCCU football program as he leads the Eagles into the next chapter with the motto "Leave No Doubt" in the forefront.

Looking Back at 2014:  "Great Foundation"MEAC Championship trophy
"I thought we laid a great foundation for what we would like to be over the next few years here at North Carolina Central University," said Mack about the 2014 campaign.
  • Won a share of the MEAC Championship with a 6-2 conference record
  • Posted the most wins as a NCAA Division I-FCS program with a 7-5 overall record
  • Earned the program's first win over a nationally-ranked FCS opponent by defeating No. 24 North Carolina A&T in the final game of the season on Nov. 22
  • Broke the school record for pass completions in a season with 227
  • Ranked third in the nation (FCS) in turnover margin at +12.0

What did you learn about your team last year?
"Our players are extremely competitive and they always play hard until the whistle blows," said Mack. "What I want people to know when they play North Carolina Central is you're going to get a team that is going to play hard, that is going to give it their all on the field down-in and down-out. And when you get a group of young men that are playing hard, good things will happen."

"When you look at our team last year, we were not overly dominant in offense, defense or special teams, but as a team we all played well. That's where we made some extreme strides."

Looking Ahead to 2015: "Another Run at a Championship"
"I think we have a great chance to make another run at a championship," said Mack. "We have 15 returning starters and a lot of young men that received quality playing time during the 2014 season. Even though they may not have been starters, they were extremely important role players."

#LeaveNoDoubt
"It means that we don't want to have any regrets in anything we do," said Mack. "You never know when your last play is. You never know what is going to happen from game-to-game.  I use this reference with our team all the time – just because we had some success last year and we beat some people, does not mean you are going to get that victory the next year, because you have to play the game.  We are going to take it one rep at a time, one step at a time, and leave no doubt about anything that we do on and off the field. So don't take anything for granted.
"I don't want people to take it the wrong way and think that we are cocky and saying that we are going to win the championship, because that's not what it's really about. It's about taking one play at a time and making sure you leave no doubt about what you put forth on that field at that point and time."

Keys to Successful Season
"We have to execute well," said Mack. "We talk about starting, executing and finishing. We want to start games off extremely well, we want to start fast out of the gate.  We want to execute well, that means we want to be disciplined, we want to be a sound football team in all aspects of what we do. And we want to be sure that we are able to finish games. We want to learn from last year's mistakes and be able to close games out the way we're supposed to close them out. Those three things are very important to us. To understand the discipline, effort and passion that it's going to take every game to get that win."

OFFENSE:
Returning Starters: 7 (OL Zachary Giles, OL Clevonne Davis, WR Quentin Atkinson, OL Carl Jones, QB Malcolm Bell, OL Sterlin Houston, TE Jvon Simmons)
Starters Lost: 4 (OL Christopher Pressley, RB Andre Clarke, WR Adrian Wilkins, WR Anas Hasic)
Coaches: T.C. Taylor (co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Chris Buckner (wide receivers), Jason Onyebuagu (run game coordinator/offensive line), Adrian Jones (running backs), Carl Funderburk (tight ends), Jordan Reid (offensive assistant)

"From the spring, I thought the offense did a good job of playing with better tempo," said Mack. "We have some good competitive battles going on at certain positions on the offensive side of the ball. We always talk about how iron sharpens iron. We were able to put a little more on our offense's plate as far as scheme because we are returning a starting quarterback, starting receivers, and four of five starting offensive linemen. We were able to implement some wrinkles within our system that hopefully will allow us to present some different looks and cause different issues for defenses that we didn't have last year."

Offensive Line
Clevonne Davis
Clevonne Davis

"It all starts up front," said Mack. "We're excited about this group. We have added some transfers and we brought in a few freshmen. We'll probably have more offensive linemen in camp than we've had in the past several years."
Clevonne Davis (Guard, Sr., 6-2, 305, Miramar, Fla.): First Team All-MEAC in 2014. Started 29 games in three seasons, including all 12 in 2014. "We're really excited about Clevonne's development. He has been the leader of that group, and will be able to provide the leadership that we want up front."
Carl Jones (Center, R-Jr., 6-1, 285, Nashville, Tenn.): Started 16 games in two seasons, including all 12 in 2014. "We are going into the season with a two-year starter at center. He makes all the calls for us. Carl is an excellent student-athlete on and off the field. He is the epitome of a student-athlete."
Sterlin Houston (So., 6-4, 320, Charlotte, N.C.): Started 6 of last 8 games as freshman in 2014. "He started as a true freshman for us last year."
Ty Gatson (R-Jr., 6-3, 270, Parker, Texas): Started first 4 games in 2014. "He had an unfortunate injury against Towson last year. He's back and is looking well."
Tarrance Wells (Jr., 6-3, 285, Oxon Hill, Md./Dean College): Transfer from Dean College. "He's going to have an opportunity to get some playing time within that group."
Zachary Giles (R-Sr., 6-1, 320, Durham, N.C.): Started 34 games in three seasons, including 11 in 2014. "He gives us a chance to add depth with a quality offensive lineman up front."
Tyler Brooks (Jr., 6-3, 295, Muscatine, Iowa/Iowa Western CC): Transfer from Iowa Western Community College. "Tyler provides experience at the position because he has played every position on the offensive line."
Jamaal Symmonett (R-Jr., 6-3, 305, Nassau, Bahamas): Missed 2014 season due to injury. Started 3 games in 2013. "Jamaal has made a full recovery from shoulder surgery that will allow him to compete for a starting position in fall camp."

Tight End
"We feel really good about the tight end position," said Mack. "We go into the season with three young men that have played in the MEAC and who we feel very comfortable with at the tight end position. And we were able to add two freshmen tight ends (Dwayne Fairley and Glen Calvin) to that group as well for depth purposes."
Jvon Simmons (So., 6-2, 230, La Plata, Md.): Third Team All-MEAC in 2014 with 11 receptions, 101 yards, 1 TD. "He's bigger, faster and stronger."
Nathan Scruggs (R-Sr., 6-2, 235, Jacksonville, Fla.): Played 11 games in 2014. "He's had a lot of starts and a lot of reps for us during the past few years."
"Both of those young men (Simmons and Scruggs) can present different issues to the defense because they are athletic enough to be flexed out and run routes, but at the same time they are strong enough to be an end-line blocker and hold point. They both have the flexibility needed to be a tight end in our system."
Daniel Rhodes (R-Jr., 6-1, 245, Charlotte, N.C.): "We've moved Daniel from defensive end to the offensive side of the ball to be primarily a blocking tight end, but he has proven over the summer that he has worked on his pass receiving skills."

Wide Receiver
Quentin Atkinson
Quentin Atkinson

"The wide receivers are a work in progress because we lost two really good young men in Anas Hasic and Adrian Wilkins," said Mack.
Quentin Atkinson (Sr., 6-1, 200, Raleigh, N.C.): Second Team All-MEAC in 2014 with 49 catches, 615 yards, team-high 5 TDs. Ranked third in MEAC with 51.2 receiving yards per game. "He is the leader of the group. He has been a workout warrior. His athletic ability numbers-wise matches that of an NFL prospect. We are excited about where he can potentially take this football team and the wide receiving corps."
Khalil Stinson (Jr., 6-3, 210, College Park, Ga./Arizona Western JC): Transfer from Arizona Western College. "Khalil has shown in the spring that he has big play ability. He finished spring as our leading receiver. He has the ability to win one-on-one matchups on the outside."
Delqwan Jackson (Sr., 6-1, 180, Louisville, Ky.): 1 catch, 43 yards, TD in 2014. "He played a limited role last year, but has had a really good summer and spring, so we're interested to see if he can take hold of that slot position and do some special things with it."
"From a reserve standpoint, we've got Brandon Galloway (So., 6-1, 190, High Point, N.C.) and Armani Lanier (So., 6-1, 205, Raleigh, N.C.) who got some playing time last year.  We're also excited about two new young men coming into the program in LaVontis Smith (Jr., 5-10, 170, Maben, Miss.), a transfer from Northeast Mississippi Community College, who was very productive, and also Jalen Wilkes (Fr., 6-2, 190, Greenville, S.C./Greenville HS), a freshman who caught more than 80 balls last year as a senior in high school.
"The wide receiver position has some length to it. We're going to be about 6-2 or better on the outside, and we're going to be explosive on the inside. And we're going to have the flexibility to create some mismatches by moving certain guys around."

Running Back
"With the loss of Andre Clarke (15 TDs in 2014) we took a nice blow there, but with the running backs coming back I feel they have a chance to be just as special in a different way," said Mack. "Andre's style was more of a down-hill bruising back, while our backs this year are shiftier. They are fast, speedy and compact."
Idreis Augustus (R-Sr., 5-9, 190, Springfield, Va.): Averaged 5.2 yards per carry in 2014 with 44 rushes, 231 yards, TD. "He has had a lot of quality playing time here at North Carolina Central, and he is back for one more year with a degree in hand. We're looking for him to not only go out as a winner, but to have his name etched in North Carolina Central's history."
Dorrel McClain (So., 5-10, 172, Cary, N.C.): Sat out 2014 season. "He has a chance to be a special back in this league. He's doing all the right things. He is one of the hardest workers we have on this football team."
Deyonta Wright (Sr., 5-9, 180, Charlotte, N.C.): Started 5 games in 2014, averaging 4.4 yards per carry with 67 rushes, 297 yards, TD. Caught 30 passes, 163 yards, TD. "He will be cross-trained this year. He caught 30 balls last year, so we know we can flex him out from the running back position to the receiver position. But he has also had success running the ball out of the backfield, so we can always bring him back and he understands how to protect and he understands all of our run game."
"So we are in a very good situation with our running back position with three quality backs that we feel very comfortable with.  For depth purposes, we bring back Kevin Thompson (R-Sr., 5-10, 180, Washington, D.C.) who has made some big plays on the offensive side of the ball and on special teams, and redshirt-freshman Ramone Simpson (R-Fr., 5-11, 185, Wilmington, N.C.) will have a chance to get into that rotation as well."

Quarterback
Malcolm Bell
Malcolm Bell

Malcolm Bell (R-Jr., 6-1, 190, Richmond, Va.): Second Team All-MEAC in 2014 with 1,982 passing yards, 15 passing TDs; 416 rushing yards, 5 rushing TDs. Started 9 games last season. "He grew as a quarterback last year," said Mack. "Every week you saw Malcolm get a little bit better. He started to better understand our system, understand our progression and understand what we were asking of him each week. He made some strides and at the end of the year ended up being a championship quarterback. I've been very pleased and impressed with his leadership role and the way he has taken on the team this off-season. He has embraced his role as our leader. The guys look to him for that leadership and mentorship. Malcolm has also made a commitment to get stronger in the weight room. He has always been one of our top conditioning guys, but in the weight room he has added about 10 pounds of muscle and he understands what the wear-and-tear of a season does to your body. We're excited about his growth and development, and where he could be at the end of the year if he continues to grow in this system."
Quinn Billerman (Sr., 6-3, 210, Raleigh, N.C.): Started 3 games in 2014. Passed for 463 yards, TD. "Quinn opened up last season as the starter. He had some success and was able to come back against Norfolk State (Nov. 15) and propel us to the win. We feel very comfortable with Quinn as a starting quarterback as well. Quinn has lost weight and is a lot more mobile than he was last year. He has always been an excellent passer and he has continued to get better with his accuracy and understanding what we are trying to do. Anything we ask him to do he is capable of doing."
"Very few teams are blessed to have two quarterbacks that a head coach feels like both can come in and help them win games. Both of those young men (Bell and Billerman) have been able to do that."
Naiil Ramadan (Fr., 6-0, 200, Charlotte, N.C./Rocky River HS): "He'll be a young man that comes into the system and will have a chance to develop and continue to grow."

DEFENSE:
Returning Starters: 8 (DB C.J. Moore, DB Ryan Smith, DB Theo Livingston, LB Jordan Miles, LB Jeremy Thompson, DB Mike Jones, DL Ja'Quan Smith, DL Antonio Brown)
Starters Lost: 3 (DL Ty Brown, DL Felix Small, DB Sayyid Muhammad)
Coaches: Granville Eastman (assistant head coach/defensive coordinator/safeties), Mike Mendenhall (linebackers/special teams coordinator), Kenyatta McCoy (cornerbacks), Jason Blalock (defensive ends), Jon Bradley (defensive tackles), Kenny Boyer (defensive quality control)

"The defense is farther along with understanding what they all can do," said Mack. "Last year, I don't feel we had just one player that dominated on defense. They all played their role. They understand what they can do and how they fit into our defensive scheme.
"One of the things we talk about on defense is hit anything that moves. There should be gang tackling. There should be constant pursuit to the football. Because when you do that, great things happen. What you saw last year is we had a great turnover margin. Part of that is because somebody was always around the ball to recover a fumble. As opposed to one person having a ton of solo tackles, we have a lot of guys that were able to contribute on the tackle."

Defensive End
Antonio Brown (R-So., 6-3, 250, Jacksonville, Fla.): Started last 6 games in 2014. Recorded 15 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles last year as a defensive tackle. "We've moved Antonio from the interior defensive line to the edge. He has always been an undersized defensive tackle, so now he fits the role of a defensive end more."
Tre Smith (R-Jr., 6-3, 215, Upper Marlboro, Md.): Played all 12 games with a start at linebacker in 2014. Collected 23 tackles, 2.0 hits for a loss, forced fumble, recovered fumble, pass break-up. "We've taken Tre from linebacker and moved him to his natural position that he played in high school at defensive end."
"The things that jump out to you with both of those young men (Antonio Brown and Tre Smith) is their motor, their pursuit, their speed and athleticism at that position. You're not going to find many defensive ends with the athleticism and the ability to change directions that these two young men have. What they lack is experience in playing at that position. But they are excited about their role and seeing who can sack the quarterback first, and we are excited about what they bring to the table as far as their athleticism."
Richard Mitchell (Sr., 6-5, 275, Southaven, Miss.): Played 11 games with a start in 2014. Tallied 12 tackles, 3.5 hits for loss, 2.0 sacks. "He played a lot of snaps for us last year at the defensive end position. He is the senior of the group. He'll be able to come in and add experience and great energy to that position. He can be a swing guy as well, with the ability to go inside on the interior line or play on the outside as well. We are expecting a lot of things from Richard."

Defensive Tackle
Ja'Quan Smith (R-So., 6-2, 300, Miramar, Fla.): Played in all 12 games, including the last 7 as a starter. Recorded 30 tackles, 4.0 sacks last season. "He has a chance to be special. As a freshman last year, he was able to come in and do a lot of damage to offensive lines in our conference. We're excited about what he is going to be able to bring to the table, and his development after having a year in the weight room."
Darius Spruill (R-Jr., 6-1, 260, Chester, Va.): Played in 11 games in 2014 with 15 tackles, 3.0 hits for a loss, 1.5 sacks, forced fumble. "He's a strong interior defensive lineman that's pound-for-pound one of the strongest players on our football team. He got the chance to play in a limited role last year. We've seen him grow physically and feel he can be a dominant force inside."
Josh Wade (R-Sr., 6-1, 260, Bladensburg, Md.): Played in all 12 games with 6 starts in 2014. Collected 27 tackles, 5.0 hits for a loss, 2.0 sacks. "He's slightly undersized, but we feel like no one can compare to his quickness and speed off the ball. He was able to do some great things last year to disrupt timing and disrupt the run game. Josh is great at getting penetration and playing on the other side of the line of scrimmage."
"Behind those guys, Roderick "Dee" Harris (Jr., 6-1, 270, Simpsonville, S.C.) will have a more extended role in our defense this year, and we have been able to bring in freshman Cyrus Stanback (Fr., 6-2, 295, Rockingham, N.C./Richmond Sr. HS) to help us create more depth at that position."

"As far as the defensive line overall, we've added some athletic ability, some size and depth, which will allow us to continue to rotate personnel and always get the best players on the field."

Linebacker
Jeremy Thompson
Jeremy Thompson

Jeremy Thompson (R-Jr., 6-1, 225, Durham, N.C.): Started 11 games in 2014 with 76 tackles (second on team), 6.0 hits for a loss, interception, pass break-up, recovered fumble. "With his athleticism and having a year under his belt as a starting linebacker, we think this can be a breakout year for Jeremy."
Jordan Miles (R-Jr., 5-11, 225, Woodbridge, Va.): Started 11 games in 2014 with 71 tackles, 4.5 hits for a loss, 4 recovered fumbles. "Jordan came in last year and made himself known. He was the third-leading tackler on the team and it's always good to bring quality guys back at that position."
Reggie Hunter (Jr., 6-0, 220, Henderson, N.C.): Played in all 12 games with a start in 2014. Tallied 28 tackles, 2.0 hits for a loss, blocked kick. "He was great on special teams for us last year, and we saw him grow so much in the spring at the linebacker position, receiving more playing time and understanding our defense and his role in the defense. We've seen him grow by extreme measures."
"We've also added transfer linebacker Kenneth O'Neal (R-So., 6-0, 220, Grand Prairie, Texas) from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

"With that group we feel like we have some quality linebacker play and some quality depth. We'll have some great competition in fall camp," said Mack.

Cornerback
Mike Jones (Jr., 5-10, 180, Baltimore, Md.): First Team All-MEAC and Second Team FCS All-America in 2014 with 40 tackles, 2.5 hits for a loss, 5 interceptions, 13 pass break-ups. Led MEAC and ranked sixth in NCAA Division I-FCS with 18 passes defended. Started all 12 games last season. "Mike is one of the top cover corners at our level. He has done nothing but great things since he stepped on campus, starting as a true freshman here. He is a ball hawk. Mike is a guy that if he is not intercepting balls, he is able to knock them down. He has that killer mentality that you look for from that cornerback position, where he'll be able to step into big games, whether it's competing for a conference championship or a nationally-televised game, and he always rises to the occasion."
Ryan Smith (R-Sr., 6-0, 185, Upper Marlboro, Md.): Started 32 games in three seasons, including all 12 games in 2014 with 58 tackles, 1.5 hits for a loss, 7 pass break-ups, recovered fumble. "Ryan is probably one of the best athletes on our team. He has a lot of the tools that NFL scouts are looking for, and he has continued to learn the position (played safety first two seasons) and is putting it all together. I think what you're going to see from Ryan this year is a young man who really emerges as a lockdown corner."
"Nolan Corpening (So., 5-10, 175, Charlotte, N.C.), Mykael Martin (So., 6-0, 170, Greensboro, N.C.) and Jamarcus Johnson (So., 5-10, 170, Greensboro, N.C.) all played limited roles as true freshmen last year, but they did receive quality reps and have played in big games."

Safety
C.J. Moore
C.J Moore

C.J. Moore (R-Sr., 6-2, 200, Raleigh, N.C.): Second Team All-MEAC in 2014 with team-high 90 tackles, 6.5 hits for a loss, interception, 5 pass break-ups, 2 forced fumbles, 3 recovered fumbles. Started 22 games in last three seasons, including all 12 starts in 2014. "C.J. is the quarterback back there for our defense. He is able to get them lined up and play various positions, whether it's strong safety, weak safety or free safety. He understands where everybody fits on defense, and we're leaning on him for that leadership at the back end of our defense."
Theo Livingston (R-Sr., 5-10, 205, Fayetteville, N.C.): Started 11 games in 2014 with 54 tackles, 5.0 hits for a loss, 3 interceptions, 3 pass break-ups, 3 recovered fumbles, 2 forced fumbles. "Theo came up with some big stops for us last year. He is a big play guy.  He is able to be around the ball and always seems to be at the right place at the right time."
Tony Williams IV (R-Sr., 6-0, 190, Nashville, Tenn.): Played in all 12 games in 2014 with 5 tackles. "He's added depth at that position and has been a part of some very successful special teams units."
Davanta Reynolds (R-Fr., 5-10, 190, Tucker, Ga.): "A redshirt-freshman that practiced with us a lot last year. In the spring he was able to showcase what we saw from him in high school. With his physicality and ability, we are looking forward to Davanta being a guy that can push and compete for playing time back there at the safety position."

SPECIAL TEAMS:
"The success of our special teams is a big compliment to coach Mike Mendenhall (special teams coordinator) and what he has been able to do with our special teams unit," said Mack. "We spend a lot of time on that phase of the game from a scheme and practice standpoint, making sure that we identify the right people that can play the right spots."

Mike Jones
Mike Jones

Mike Jones (Return Specialist, Jr., 5-10, 180, Baltimore, Md.): First Team All-MEAC and Third Team FCS All-America in 2014. Ranked second in the nation (FCS) in punt returns with an average return of 19.1 yards. Averaged team-best 22.3 yards per kickoff return. "Mike is a very elusive runner. He has the ability to make the first defender miss, but also the speed to cross the goal line. When you have a dynamic returner on special teams, it allows us to always have a chance to win the field position battle."
Nathaniel Tilque (Punter, So., 6-2, 190, Charlotte, N.C.): Averaged 38.7 yards per punt, long of 56 yards, placed 19 inside 20-yard line. "He handled all of our punting duties last year as a true freshman. He has gotten bigger and stronger. We're looking forward to see exactly how he can grow off his true freshman campaign. I thought he had a decent freshman season, but I do think that as the season progressed he continued to get better and better at acclimating to the college game."
Brandon McLaren (Kicker, R-Jr., 5-9, 175, Miami, Fla.): Averaged 58.3 yards per kickoff. Made 4-of-8 field goals (long of 45 yards) and 13-of-15 extra-point kicks. "He handled all of our kickoff duties last year. He has one of the stronger legs in the conference. He will also continue to grow in aspects of kicking field goals and extra points."
Eric Fenton (Kicker, So., 6-1, 215, Mebane, N.C.): Team's second-leading scorer in 2014 with 49 points on 8-of-13 field goals (long of 47 yards) and 25-of-27 extra-point kicks. "Eric made some quality extra points and field goals for our team in 2014. His experience in clutch situations should make him even better in 2015."
Nigel Macauley (Kicker, Fr., 5-11, 195, Fayetteville, N.C./E.E. Smith HS): "A true freshman that will have a chance to compete for those field goal and extra point duties.

"We feel like our special teams play should not miss a beat; if anything we feel we have a chance to get better," said Mack. "We are going to put the same emphasis on it and will tweak a few things as far as our scheme, and we plan to be even more aggressive."
