Layne Named MEAC Rookie of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University freshman quarterback Nelson Layne was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Layne accounted for three touchdowns and 247 yards of total offense in his collegiate debut against Texas Southern on Saturday.

The Highland Springs, Virginia, native led the Eagles in both passing and rushing, completing 16 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown while adding 116 yards and two scores on the ground. He connected with eight different receivers during the contest.

Layne opened the scoring with a 60-yard touchdown run in the first quarter before connecting with Connor Everett on a 10-yard touchdown pass later in the period. He added a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to help NCCU build a 21-7 advantage.

The Eagles return to action Saturday, Sept. 5, when they host Elizabeth City State University in their home opener at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m., and the game will air live on the MEAC Digital Network.
