BOX SCOREDURHAM, N.C. – All four North Carolina Central University men's tennis seniors won their singles matches on Senior Day to lead the North Carolina Central University men's tennis team to a 7-0 victory over Averett University Monday evening at the NCCU Tennis Courts.
The Eagles sets a Division I era single-season wins record for a second straight season finishing the regular season 10-9 overall (NCCU's previous best was last year's 9-11 mark).
Seniors
Daniil Gerasimov (6-0, 6-1),
Fabrice George (7-5, 7-5),
Jamal Hoyte (6-0, 7-6) and
Tamina Kienka (6-1, 6-0) all won in straight sets playing from No. 2-5 in the lineup, respectively.
"I am very proud of our seniors," said NCCU head coach
D. Curtis Lawson. "It has been an exciting journey with many of our seniors coming in as freshman. We had many challenges and were trying to develop depth in our roster. We were committed to a challenging and rigorous schedule – which doesn't always set up for a great win-loss percentages – but we were determined it was the right course to take. If you play the best you will eventually become the best that has been somewhat our aim and mission. It's just really great to see in four years some pretty cool success which has been historic for our program."
Gerasimov, who lost his first match of the season to a nationally ranked opponent, has continued a remarkable senior season with his 17th consecutive victory. Gerasimov (17-1) has the most individual singles wins in a season for NCCU since the program went to the DI ranks in 2008.
Freshman
Kert Kilumets (6-2, 6-0) is part of the Eagles bright future and he won NCCU's other singles match as well in straight sets. The rookie has played atop of the Maroon and Gray lineup and has 11-6 record.
The Cougars (5-9) had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles and No 6 singles matches with only five active players. Carolos Lora and Alexander Terentiev highlighted play for Averett with a hard-fought 8-7 (7) doubles win.
Gerasimov and George secured the doubles team point in favor of the hosts winning the No. 1 doubles race to eight points in quick order at 8-0. The senior duo is 8-4 together this season.
NCCU is waiting for one more Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match to be played (Florida A&M at South Carolina State) after being postponed due to inclement weather before the squad will find out from the league office its fate heading into the MEAC Men's Tennis Championships in Cayce, South Carolina on Thursday-Saturday, April 16-18.
