BOX SCOREBALTIMORE, Md. – Senior
Daniil Gerasimov, sophomore
William East and sophomore
Kyle Hairston all won in straight sets in leading visiting North Carolina Central University to a 5-1 men's tennis road victory over host Coppin State University on Friday afternoon at the Baltimore Fitness and Tennis Club.
After suffering a pair of close 4-3 losses in its last competition last Sunday, NCCU was able to get back into the win column in a decisive way against CSU to improve to 4-6 overall.
With Coppin State playing with a depleted roster the two teams decided to start the duel match with singles first. NCCU started up 2-nil with forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6 so the Eagles quickly secured the team victory after Gerasimov, East and Hairston won their matches.
Hairston (6-0, 6-0) secured his first win of the season in dominating fashion by not losing a single game.
Gerasimov (6-2, 6-4) and East (6-3, 6-4) continued to shine in the Eagles upper half of the lineup by extending their individual win streaks to eight and five, respectively.
Gerasimov and senior partner
Fabrice George were winning their top tier doubles match, 2-1, early when play was stopped after the Eagles secured the team victory.
CSU (0-4) remained winless on the year despite a three-set singles win by Gavin Lewis on the third court.
NCCU continues its northern swing with a clash against MEAC member Howard University in Washington, D.C., on Saturday at 1 p.m.
