DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team tips off the new year by hosting Bluefield State on Saturday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium. Admission is free.
After spending nine of their first 11 games on the road, the Lady Eagles are in the midst of a five straight home games. Following Saturday's contest against Bluefield State, NCCU plays Wofford on Jan. 6 at 6 p.m., then welcomes MEAC foes South Carolina State (Jan. 10 at 2 p.m.) and Savannah State (Jan. 12 at 5:30 p.m.) to the Bull City.
NCCU (2-10) is topped by senior
Racquel Davis, who is the conference's leading rebounder with an average of 9.4 boards per game and ranks eighth in the league with a team-high 13.8 points per outing. The 6-0 Brooklyn, New York native, who also places seventh in the MEAC with 16 blocked shots on the season, is 31 points shy of scoring her 1,000th career point. She tallied 398 points in two seasons at Johnson C. Smith University and has posted 571 points in a season-and-a-half at NCCU.
Bluefield State (9-5) enters Saturday's match-up riding a three-game win streak. The Lady Blues boast five student-athletes that average double figures in scoring, with sophomore guard Shakima Wiggins leading the team with 15.6 points per game. Senior guard Charity Harris is second on the squad in scoring with 13.5 points per contest, while topping Bluefield State with 89 assists and 44 steals.
