NCCU WOMEN’S TENNIS FALLS TO ECU ON THE ROAD

Muamba Captures Lone Lady Eagles Victory

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback as the Lady Eagles (4-11) fell to the East Carolina Pirates (11-10) on Saturday, April 5 in Greenville, N.C.

During the afternoon tilt ECU claimed the doubles point after Melis Tanik and Emily Groeneveld defeated NCCU's rookie duo of Lynsey Cover and Tamara Jeremic (8-0) at the No. 3 followed by a No.2 Pirates victory when Michelle Castro and Nicole LaDuca beat the sophomore Lady Eagle twosome of Aissa Muamba and Mia Ramic (8-5) at the No. 2 seed.

ECU's Groeneveld opened singles action by dismissing Ekaterina Nekrasova 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 before her teammate Gray added a 6-2, 6-3 win against Cover 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.

The Pirates No. 4  Storozheva followed with a 6-4, 6-0 defeat of Jeremic, LaDuca topped Ramic 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5 and ECU's Tanik outlasted Rebecca Wood 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 to close out ECU's scoring.

The Lady Eagles posted their only win at No. 2 when Muamba handed Castro a 6-3, 6-4 setback to mark the final score at 6-1 in favor of the host Pirates.

NCCU returns to the courts on Monday, April 7 as the Lady Eagles look to extend their two-year home win streak as they host North Carolina A&T at 3 p.m. on the NCCU Tennis Courts.
