LADY EAGLES UNABLE TO PULL OFF DOUBLE OT VICTORY OVER B-CU

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite forcing double overtime, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team (8-14, 3-6) was unable to pull off the revenge victory over the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats (8-15, 5-6), falling 66-60 on Saturday in McDouglad-McLendon Gymnasium.

As time expired after forty minutes of play, senior Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) knocked down a shot from the right corner with 15 seconds left on the clock to push the Lady Eagles into their first overtime contest of the season with the score knotted at 53.

B-CU's Kiara Redmon fouled NCCU rookie Morgan Jones (Stockbridge, Ga.) with 21 seconds left in the first overtime as she knocked down 1-of-2 shots from the charity stripe, tying the score at 58 and forcing a second OT.

The start of the game was all Lady Wildcats as they scored eight straight before the Lady Eagles saw their first points at the 14:42 mark off of a shot from behind the arch from freshmen Alexus Hynes (Houston, Texas).

The two teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the first frame before junior Rachel Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) knocked down a shot from Freeman with 2:19 left to put the Lady Eagles on top for the second time.

B-CU's Taylor Houston answered with less than a minute on the game clock to give the Lady Wildcats the one point advantage, 25-24, going into the locker room.  

During second half action the spread remained under five points until the Lady Wildcats went on a 7-0 run giving them their largest lead of the game at nine with 3:23 left in regulation.

In the final three minutes of play, NCCU went on a 12-3 run, beginning with a clutch three pointer from Hynes and finishing with Freeman's essential three-ball to tie the game and take the Lady Eagles into overtime.

During the first OT, NCCU pulled ahead by three before Chastity Rene Taylor knocked down four-straight shots from the charity stripe to put the Lady Wildcats back on top by one with 2:12 left.

For nearly the next two minutes both teams remained scoreless. Collecting three consecutive offensive boards, the Lady Eagles maintained possession of the ball for over a minutes and a half before Jones was fouled under the basket and sent to the line for two shots. Knocking down 1-of-2 shots, the rookie tied the game at 58 and the NCCU defense was able to hold off B-CU once again to force a second overtime.
 
In double overtime it was all Shakeyia Colyer for the Lady Wildcats as the B-CU senior earned seven of the Lady Wildcats eight points compared to the Lady Eagles single basket from Freeman, giving B-CU the six-point, 66-60 victory over NCCU.

The Lady Eagles were led by Freeman's 25 points on 9-for-32 shooting from the field, 5-for-13 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe while Hynes added a team second-best seven points, tying her season high.

On the boards NCCU was led by senior Tiffany Gary (Delray Beach, Fla.) and Tisha Dixon (Kinston, N.C.) who each pulled down 13 rebounds while junior Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) collected 10 and added seven points.

The Lady Wildcats were headed by the senior duo of Taylor and Colyer who each collected sixteen points, while Kailyn Williams pulled down a team best 11 boards and added 12 points.

As a team, NCCU shot 20-for-66 from the field (30.3%), 7-for-18 from three-point land (38.9%) and 13-for-24 from the free throw line (54.2%) while outrebounding B-CU 58-45, collecting 11 assists, and five steals.

The Lady Eagles return to action hosting Florida A&M in the Lady Eagles and the Lady Rattlers second match-up of the season on Monday, Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
