Subject 2 Change Lady Eagle Highlights (NCCU at NC A&T)
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team suffered its largest Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss of the season as the Lady Eagles (9-17, 4-9 MEAC) fell to the rival North Carolina A&T Aggies (21-4, 11-2 MEAC) 79-51 on Saturday, Feb. 22 in Greensboro.
Redshirt senior
Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) led NCCU offensively scoring a game-high 17 points on 6-for-22 shooting from the field, 1-for-7 from behind the arc and 4-for-7 from the free throw line, while also adding three boards, three assists and three Lady Eagle steals.
Junior
Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led NCCU on the glass collecting a game-high 12 rebounds and scoring an additional eight points for the Lady Eagles while junior
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) and rookie
Alexus Hynes (Houston, Texas) added 11 and seven points respectively.
The game remained scoreless until the17:36 mark in the first half after Freeman connected with Hynes to give NCCU its only lead of the contest at 2-0.
The Lady Eagles kept the NCA&T led under ten points for the first 15 minutes of the contest until the Aggies went on a 7-2 run to end the first frame, taking a 17-point, 37-20 lead into the locker room.
NCA&T kept the offensive momentum alive during the second half going ahead by as many as 32 points at the 6:32 mark before capturing the 79-51 season sweep over NCCU.
The 28 point shortage was NCCU's largest conference loss during the 2013-14 season.
The Aggies finished with four double-figure scoring performances led by Debbie Smiths 18 points and ten rebounds.
As a team, NCCU shot 18-for-50 from the field (36.0%), 2-for-9 from behind the arch (22.2%) and 13-for-23 from the free throw line (56.5%) while pulling down 36 boards, dishing eight assists and collecting five steals.
NCCU returns home for "Senior Day" on Saturday, March 1 as the Lady Eagles take on the Savannah State Tigers in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium at 2 p.m.
