BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's tennis team fell to 0-6 on the season as the Lady Eagles dropped a 6-1 decision to the Campbell Camels (4-2) on Thursday, Feb. 20 in Buies Creek, N.C., at the Nisbet Tennis Center.
Sophomore
Aissa Muamba, who is on a two match win-streak, earned NCCU's solo victory during the match defeating Campbell's No. 2 Ana Maria Ortiz 6-3, 6-4.
During doubles competition the junior duo of
Rebecca Wood and
Ekaterina Nekrasova fell to the Camel's Karolina Chernaya/Ortiz (8-3) at the No. 1 spot, sophomores Muamba and
Mia Ramic dropped a No. 2, 7-6 (7-0) battle to Natasha Afridi/Tamara Stanic and the rookie twosome of
Lynsey Cover and
Tamara Jeremic were defeated by Campbell's Amelie Reichart/Claudia Ortiz (8-3).
After falling behind 1-0 in doubles action, Ramic cleared the courts first for NCCU in singles competition falling to Stanic (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 4 spot. No. 6 Jeramic and No. 5 Cover followed quickly behind Ramic as they suffered losses to Ewa Telenga (6-1, 6-1) and Reichart (6-3, 6-0) respectively.
With one break of serve in each set, NCCU's Nekrasova fell to Afridi at the No. 3 (7-5, 7-6).
Following Muamba's No. 2 victory, with NCCU down 5-1, Wood's No. 1 battle went to a third set tie breaker. After a three hour clash, Wood fell to Campbell's Chernaya (6-7, 6-4, 10-5).
The Lady Eagles return to the courts as they open at home on Friday, Feb. 20 in a 2 p.m. match-up against the Appalachian State Mountaineers on the NCCU Tennis Courts.
