WASHINGTON, D.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team looks for its first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory as the Lady Eagles wrap up their weekend DMV road trip in the nation's capital, facing the Howard Lady Bison at 5:30 p.m., inside Burr Gymnasium.
The 2-5, 0-1 MEAC, Lady Eagles enter the contest after suffering a 71-61 loss to Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday, Dec. 6 in Princess Anne, Maryland while Howard (0-8, 0-1 MEAC) looks for its first win of the season after falling to North Carolina A&T, 80-69, on Saturday at home.
Howard currently holds the 5-0 all-time series advantage over NCCU, with the last meeting decided by only five points as the Lady Eagles suffered a 66-61 setback in Washington, D.C., Feb. 1, 2014.
LEADERSThe senior class currently leads NCCU in nearly every category as Racuqel Davis (Brooklyn, New York) averages 16.1 points and 9.7 boards while the 6-0 senior also heads the Lady Eagles with 1.1 blocks,
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, California) swipes 1.9 steals per contest and
Rachel Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, California) drops 1.9 dimes a game.
Te'Shya Heslip Lady Bison in multiple categories, including points (16.5), assists (5.5), steals (2.3), and minutes (33.1) while Victoria Gonzales anchors the defensive end, leading the squad in rebounds (5.2) and blocks (1.0).
NCCU BREAKDOWNSenior
Racquel Davis collected a career-best 29 points and career-high 19 rebounds during a home loss to Winthrop on Nov. 22, averaging 23.5 points per game and 18.0 rebounds for the week, earning her MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors (Dec. 1)
Sophomore duo
Morgan Jones (Stockbrdige, Georgia) and
Tia Clement (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) earned career-best scoring performances at Campbell, as Jones tied her 14 points scored at WCU, and Clement put up a career-high 10 points, shooting 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
Senior
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, California) earned the season-first MEAC Player of the Week honors, following the 2014-15 opening week, the league announced Monday, Nov. 17 while also grabbing College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week honors after week one.
NCCU returns 8 letterwinners and three starters this season from a squad that went 11-19 overall in 6-10 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, finishing ninth in the regular season a year ago.
Head coach
Vanessa Taylor enters her third season at NCCU and holds a 14-47 career record with the Lady Eagles.
The Lady Eagles were picked to finish tenth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
After being named to the 2013-14 MEAC third-team, Davis was selected to repeat on the pre-season All-MEAC Third Team.
