NCCU VOLLEYBALL KICKS OFF HOMECOMING WEEKEND WITH 3-0 WIN

Murphy Leads Eagles with 19 Kills during Victory

DURHAM, North Carolina – In an electric atmosphere, filled with alumni and fans, the North Carolina Central University volleyball team collected its second sweep of the 2014 season as the Eagles took down the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-18) during a season rematch in the L.T. Walker Complex on Nov. 7, to kick off NCCU's homecoming weekend.

Sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Rancho Cucamonga, California) continued to lead the Eagles offensively, collecting a game-high 19 kills while senior Ashley McCarthy (Elmont, New York) trailed with nine.

Set one shared 18 ties and eight lead changes between the Eagles and the Bulldogs before NCCU was able to covert a SCSU error into a 27-25 victory.

With the 1-0 match lead the Eagles carried their set one momentum into the second, jumping out to a 3-0 early lead.

Swapping the lead and score back-and-froth for the majority of the set, a kill from McCarthy, knotting the score at 20, sparked a 5-1 run from NCCU, as the Eagles pulled away with a 25-21 victory and took a 2-0 advantage into the ten-minute intermission.

SCSU attempted to stay alive and force a fourth set during the third, as the Bulldogs pulled ahead 12-9 early on, but NCCU ceased the effort, capturing the 21-18 victory of off a Murphy kill, completing the Eagle 3-0 sweep.

The senior/rookie duo of Alice Genna (Rome, Italy) and Paige Phillips (Birmingham, Alabama) shared time directing the NCCU offense, as the twosome amassed 41 combined assists

Defensively, Melissa Rabell Pineiro (Canovanas, Puerto Rico) headed the match with a game-best 15 digs while freshman Gabrielle Leclerc (Narragansett, Rhode Island) collected a season-best three blocks, including one solo.

The Eagles return to the court on Sunday, Nov. 9, wrapping up the 2014 regular season, as five NCCU seniors take floor for their home-career finale. The Eagles face Savannah State at 2 p.m., inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
