NCCU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS HOME SLATE AGAINST WINTHROP

DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women's basketball team opens its 2014-15 home slate against the Winthrop Eagles on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m., in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium. Admission is free.

After starting the year with a 64-59 win over Western Carolina during its season-opener Nov. 14, the Lady Eagles (1-2) have dropped back-to-back contests falling to Campbell (65-60) and Gardner-Webb (73-53).

Wintrop (1-2) currently holds a 5-0 series lead over NCCU, while the last meeting between the two took place in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where the Winthrop Eagles  outscored NCCU 40-20 in the second half, cruising to a 68-46 victory.
 
NCCU BREAKDOWN
Senior Racquel Davis led the Eagles for the first time this season with 19 points, shooting 5-for-11 from the field and 9-for-10 from the line against Gardner-Webb (Nov. 22). The Brooklyn New York, native also led NCCU on the boards with nine rebounds despite her early foul trouble.

Sophomore duo Morgan Jones (Stockbrdige, Georgia) and Tia Clement (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) earned career-best scoring performances at Campbell, as Jones tied her 14 points scored at WCU, and Clement put up a career-high 10 points, shooting 3-for-5 from behind the arc.

Senior Khyra Conerly (Oakland, California) earned the season-first MEAC Player of the Week honors, following the 2014-15 opening week, the league announced Monday, Nov. 17 while also grabbing College Sports Madness MEAC Player of the Week honors after week one.

NCCU returns 8 letterwinners and three starters this season from a squad that went 11-19 overall in 6-10 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) play, finishing ninth in the regular season a year ago.

Head coach Vanessa Taylor enters her third season at NCCU and holds a 14-47 career record with the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Eagles were picked to finish tenth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll by the league's coaches and sports information directors.

After being named to the 2013-14 MEAC third-team, Davis was selected to repeat on the pre-season All-MEAC Third Team.
