SECOND-HALF BREAKDOWN FOR NCCU CAUSES 68-46 LOSS TO WINTHROP

Freeman Earns 1,000th Collegiate Career Point During First Half

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – After leading by as many as nine points during first half action, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team was outscored 40-20 during the second 20 minutes leading to the Lady Eagles (5-8) 68-46 loss to the Winthrop Eagles (10-4) during NCCU's final non-conference contest on Tuesday, Jan. 7 in Rock Hill, S.C.

Red shirt senior transfer Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) earned her 1,000th collegiate career point (UNCW 2009-13, NCCU 2013-14) after a made free throw at the 9:36 mark. Freeman finished the contest with 10 points, shooting 3-for-14 from the field, 2-for-7 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line, pushing the 5-5 shooting guard to 1,004 career points.

Junior Racquel Davis (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Lady Eagles with 12 points and eight boards while fellow junior Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) contributed 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Winthrop scored first during the contest before Freeman knocked down a three ball with 18:55 on the clock, putting NCCU on top 3-2.

A steal from Freeman and dish to freshman Alexus Hynes (Houston, Texas), who knocked down a shot from three-point land, gave the Lady Eagles their largest lead of the half at 19-10 with 9:11 left in the first frame.

Over a four minute span, Winthrop went on a 12-2 run, giving the host Eagles their first lead of the contest at the 1:06 mark, after a jumper from WU's Erica Williams set the score to 24-23.

A shot from behind the arc from Freeman as the first half clock expired cut Winthrop's lead to two as the host Eagles took the 28-26 advantage into the locker room.

Starting the second 20 minutes, the Winthrop Eagles went on a 17-2 run, pulling ahead of NCCU 45-28 before two made free throws Davis broke NCCU's scoring drought at the 14:15 mark.

The Lady Eagles never regained momentum during the final 14 minutes, being outscored by Winthrop 40-20 during second half action.

The host Eagles were led by Erica Williams 16 points and 10 boards while three additional Eagles scored in double-figures for Winthrop.

As a team, NCCU shot 18-for-62 from the field (29.0%), 3-for-12 from the three-point line (25.0%) and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe (70.0%) while also pulling down 45 boards, dishing five assists, collecting 12 steals and four team blocks.

NCCU begins Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 11 as the Lady Eagles travel to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers at 4 p.m.
