RALEIGH, N.C. - The North Carolina Central University men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season dropped a 7-0 decision to the No. 35 nationally-ranked North Carolina State University Wolfpack on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Raleigh, N.C.
Four Eagles faced off against nationally-ranked singles players and a one nationally-ranked doubles duo.
NCCU's
Daniil Gerasimov competed as the No. 1 singles player for the Eagles and was defeated by the No. 82 nationally-ranked NCSU No. 1, Thomas Weigel (6-2,6-1). Fellow Eagle
Stephan Charles-Donatien dropped the No. 2 seed match to the Wolfpack's No. 76 ranked Robbie Mudge (6-1, 6-1),
Tamina Kienka fell to No. 50 Austin Powell at the No. 3 spot (6-1, 6-3) and
William East dropped a match to nationally-ranked No. 83 Nick Horton at the No. 4 spot (6-2, 6-0).
Fabrice George was also defeated by NCSU's Beck Bond (6-2, 6-1) at No. 5 and
Thomas Persico dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Sean Weber at No. 6.
In doubles competition, the Wolfpack combination of Weber/Horton ranks No. 19 nationally and defeated Gerasimov/East, 6-0 at the No. 1. Charles-Donatien/Kienka fell to Mudge/Ian Dempster (6-0) at the No. 2 seed and Austin Powell/Bond defeated NCCU's twosome of George/Persico (6-2).
The Eagles return to the courts Sunday, Jan. 19 as they faceoff with the No. 9 Duke Blue Devils at 6 p.m., in Durham.
