WILMINGTON, N.C. – Troubled by weather, the North Carolina Central University softball team dropped the doubleheader nonconference match-up to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Seahawks 9-0 and 5-1 on Thursday, April 25, in Wilmington, N.C.
After a fifty one minute rain delay between the second and third inning of game one, the contest was ended in five after the Lady Eagles suffered a shutout, 9-0 loss.
Junior transfer
London Germ earned NCCU’s only hit during game ones match-up after she beat out a grounder to second base during the top of the fourth inning.
London Booker (2-24) took home the loss for the Lady Eagles after throwing the first two innings before the delay. The rookie pitcher gave up six hits, six runs, one walk and struck out one Seahawk.
Senior
Kayla McPeek closed on the mound for NCCU giving up an additional four hits, three unearned runs, one walk and striking out two batters.
During game two innings one and two remained scoreless between the Lady Eagles and UNC-W.
The Seahawks struck first during the bottom of the third inning after a sacrifice fly to right field scored the runner from third, giving UNC-W the 1-0 lead.
After holding the Seahawks to one run, the Lady Eagles answered in the top of the six after
Markell Wylie reached first on a muffed throw. London Germ advanced Wylie from first to third after a sacrifice bunt to first base.
Emerie Germ followed her sister with a single up the middle scoring Wylie and putting NCCU on the board for the first time and tying the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the sixth
Bianka Molina gave up one run to the Seahwaks as they took the 2-1 lead and the Lady Eagles made a pitching change.
With McPeek back on the mound, UNC-W collected three more runs giving them a 5-1 advantage heading into the seventh inning.
NCCU was unable to answer in the seventh inning, as they suffered the 5-1 loss.
Molina (1-13) took home the loss for the Lady Eagles during game two after spending five plus innings in the circle. The senior pitcher gave up six hits, four runs, four earned runs, four walks and four strike outs.
The Lady Eagles return action on Saturday, May 4 as they take on the rival NC A&T Lady Aggies in a three-game weekend series. Game one of the Saturday doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m., as NCCU will honor the 2013 seniors during senior day in Durham, N.C., at Parkwood Athletic Field.
