NCCU WOMEN’S TENNIS ADVANCES TO MEAC CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINALS

Lady Eagles Defeat Delaware State 4-2 during First Round

RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team advanced to semi-final action during the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship after the Lady Eagles extended their win streak to four by defeating the Delaware State Lady Hornets 4-2, on Friday, April 19 in Raleigh, N.C., and the Millbrook Tennis Center.

NCCU split the first two doubles matches after Brianna Gatson and Julia Aguilar fell to DSU’s Marina Sicic and Brittany Marshall (8-0) at the No. 3, and the sophomore No.1 duo of Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood defeated Lady Hornets Maja Banas and Kristina Aleksic 8-1.

DSU earned the doubles point after Aissa Muamba and Olesya Palko fell in a hard fought battle to the No. 2 Lady Hornet’s combination of Ksenia Kozlova and Vanja Andonova 8-5.

In singles action Nekrasova set the pace for the Lady Eagles clearing the courts first and defeating her No. 2 opponent, Aleksic, 6-1, 6-0.

With the score tied 1-1 Palko pushed NCCU on top after winning at the No.1 spot over DSU’s Banas, 6-1, 6-3.

The Lady Hornets answered in the No. 6 spot with a 6-1, 6-2 victory between Marshall and NCCU’s Gatson, tying the game for the second time at 2-2.

Recently named MEAC Rookie of the Year, Muamba captured the No. 3 victory over Kozlova (6-3, 6-0) putting the score within one point before being decided in the No. 4 singles match between Wood and Andonova in favor of the Lady Eagles (6-1, 6-3).

Mia Ramic’s match remained unfinished after NCCU sealed the 4-2 victory with the NCCU rookie leading DSU’s Sicic 6-2, 2-2, unfinished.

The Lady Eagles return to action on Saturday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m., in Raleigh, N.C., at the Millbrook Tennis Center as they take on the No. 1 seed in the northern division, Morgan State, in semi-final action of the MEAC Championship.
