NCCU WOMEN’S TENNIS MAKES HISTORY DURING 4-3 VICTORY OVER GWU

Lady Eagles 12 Wins Marks Most in Program History

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University women’s tennis team makes program history as the Lady Eagles captured their 12th season victory, the most in school history, during a 4-3 decision over the Gardner-Webb Runnin’ Bulldogs on Saturday, April 13 in Boiling Springs, N.C., at the Webb Tennis Complex.

Gardner-Webb captured the doubles victory after Erica White and Jenny Lunde defeated NCCU’s No. 1 duo of Olesya Palko and Aissa Muamba, 8-4 and the Bulldogs No. 2 doubles combination of Yasmin Doost and Rokia Sacko was victorious over Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood, 8-4.

During singles action NCCU evened the score at 1-1 after a win by default at No. 6 singles before White pushed the Runnin’ Bulldogs back on top winning 6-2, 6-2 at No.1 against Palko, giving GWU the 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Eagles responded with wins at No.’s 2 and 4 singles as Nekrasova and Wood won 6-1, 6-3 and 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 respectively, moving NCCU ahead 3-2 and a point away from winning the match.

A battle of the freshmen took place at the No.5 spot as GWU’s rookie, Sacko, outlasted Lady Eagle’s Mia Ramic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

With the team score tied at 3-3, the match came down to the result of the No. 3 singles competition between Lunde and Muamba. NCCU would win the match, 4-3, after Muamba improved to 16-3 overall on the season, seizing the 6-2, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 victory for the Lady Eagles.

NCCU improves to 12-7 overall on the season after the thrilling one-point, non-conference, victory over GWU.

The Lady Eagles return to the courts on Tuesday, April 16 during their 2013 regular-season closer in Radford, Va., as NCCU takes on Radford University at 2:30 p.m.
