RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University men’s tennis team captured its fourth victory out of the past five matches as the Eagles defeated the No. 1 ranked Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Shaw Bears 6-3 on Saturday, April 13, in Raleigh, N.C., at the Biltmore Hills Park.
During doubles action Shaw seized the No. 1 spot victory after Charles Silva and Sergio Cuartas defeated NCCU’s
Daniil Gerasimov and
Jose Fabara 9-7.
The Eagles captured the final two doubles points after
Stephan Charles-Donatien and
Jamal Hoyte defeated the Bears No. 2 duo of Samuel Padilla and Juan Sanchez 9-7 and
Fabrice George and
Tamina Kienka won by default as NCCU’s No. 3.
In singles competition Gerasimov defeated Shaw’s No. 1, Silva, 6-3, 2-0, retired. Charles-Donatien was victorious over Sanchez at the No. 3 position (6-4, 6-1), Kienka won at No. 5 beating Padilla 6-2, 6-2 and Hoyte won by default in the No. 6 spot.
The Eagles advance to 5-10 overall on the season at the Bears fall to 14-5.
NCCU returns to the courts on Sunday, April 14 as the Eagles wrap up their 2013 regular-season on the road in Washington, D.C., where they take on the Howard Bison at 12 p.m.
