Lady Eagles Earn Season Sweep over SSU

DURHAM, N.C.
– North Carolina Central University women’s basketball lone senior Chasidy Williams led the Lady Eagles to their first home win and second victory of the season earning the season sweep over Savannah State after being honored on her senior day Saturday, March 2, inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on the campus of NCCU.

After being fouled, the Fayetteville, N.C., native found herself at the charity stripe with a one-and-one situation for the Lady Eagles with two seconds left on the game clock and her senior day game tied at 29. Williams knocked down the first of two shots putting NCCU on top by one.

As time expired the senior stole one last SSU possession, making a three-point shot at the buzzer, giving the Lady Eagles their largest lead of the game and a four-point victory, 33-29 over the Lady Tigers.

In addition to Williams, freshman Tisha Dixon recorded her second straight double-double to lead all scorers during the contest with 12 points and seizing 10 rebounds.

Despite two quick first half ties and three lead changes, the Lady Eagles struggled offensively during the first half of action allowing the SSU to pull ahead by nine points with a 1:16 left to play at 18-9. Amber Neely made a layup at the 54-second mark to knock the Lady Tigers’ lead down to seven heading into the locker room.

NCCU opened the final 20 minutes on a 6-0 run, trailing SSU by one at the 17:29 mark after Dixon’s two made free throws. The rookie’s made layup at the 4:11 mark tied the ball game for the first time of the season half at 27. Fellow freshman Aja Hoyle’s made basket with 3:13 left on the clock pushed NCCU on top before SSU tied the game at 29 and sent Williams to the free throw line.

The Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Tigers 22-11 in the second half of play, leading them to their 33-29 conference victory.

As a team, NCCU shot 23 percent from the field on 11-for-47 shooting, grasped 40 boards, nine steals, dished out five assists and shot 10-for-14 from the charity stripe at 71 percent.

SSU was led by Erin Hogue who finished the conference match-up with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Overall, the Lady Tigers shot 21 percent from the field, collected 43 rebounds, seven steals, blocked two Lady Eagle shots and shot 83 percent from the charity stripe on 5-for-6 shooting.

NCCU advances to 2-25 on the season and 2-12 in league play, while SSU falls to 7-20 and 2-12 in the conference.

The Lady Eagles return to action Monday, March 4 as they compete on their home floor for the last time during the 2012-13 campaign. NCCU faces the Lady Bulldogs from South Carolina State with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
