NORFOLK, Va. – During the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament the Lady Eagles dropped a three-point decision to the No. 5 seed Coppin State, falling 44-41 on Monday, March 11 at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va.
Rookie
Tisha Dixon finished her freshman campaign earning her fifth double-double scoring a team-high 13 points and pulling down a game-high 13 rebounds.
In addition to Dixon’s scoring performance
Aja Hoyle and
Chasidy Williams also put up double figures for the Lady Eagles scoring 13 and 10 apiece. Williams also contributed seven rebounds during the loss while Hoyle grabbed three steals.
CSU opened the contest pulling ahead of the Lady Eagles 4-0 at the 16:50 mark before they took their largest lead of seven with 5:09 left in the half. NCCU held Coppin State scoreless for the remaining five minutes of the contest taking a two point lead into the locker room at the half, 20-18.
After the first twenty minutes of play, Hoyle led the Lady Eagles with seven points, while Tixon and Williams collected five rebounds apiece. NCCU shot 38 percent from the field and 75 percent from the charity stripe and pulled down 18 first half boards.
The second half of the game consisted of three ties and seven lead changes as the Lady Eagles posted a game-high lead of five on two occasions.
With 4:32 left in the contest NCCU took a 40-35 lead after two made free throws from Dixon. The final four minutes of the game Coppin State went on a 9-1 run giving them a three point lead as time expired. CSU advanced to the second round of the tournament after defeating NCCU 44-41.
As a team NCCU shot 30 percent from the field on 13-for-43 shooting, pulled down a game-high 37 rebounds, collected nine steals and shot 15-for-20 from the free throw line.
Coppin State was led by Shawntae Payne who scored 13 points and Leola Spotwood and Larrisa Carter who seized seven rebounds each.
As a team CSU shot 34 percent from the field, collected 35 boards, nine steals, blocked five shots and shot 5-for-11 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Eagles finished the 2012-13 season 2-28 overall and 2-14 in league play during head coach Vanessa Taylors first season at NCCU.
