NCCU SOFTBALL WRAPS UP WEEKEND AT FROST CLASSIC

Lady Eagles Finish 0-5 in Chattanooga

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The North Carolina Central University softball team wrapped up the 2013 Frost Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, finishing with a 0-5 record with losses to Ohio University (11-0), the University of Toledo (9-1), Northern Kentucky University (8-1), Niagara University (9-1) and Eastern Kentucky University (9-0) Feb. 22-24, in Chattanooga, Tenn.

During game one of the weekend the Lady Eagles took on Ohio University where they struggled on the offensive side of the field being shut out by the Bobcats 11-0 in a five-inning game. Only two NCCU student-athletes earned hits during the match-up during innings one and three when senior Nadia Jefferies and junior London Germ each collected one.

Freshman London Booker (1-4) took home the loss during the first game giving up five hits, nine runs, six earned runs, walking four Bobcat batters and striking out three.

Game two for NCCU against Toledo saw three hits, three errors and one run as the Lady Eagles fell 9-1 in five innings. The rookie duo of Amber Kirkland and Joy Simpson earned the only hits for NCCU during the contest, with Simpson collecting two hits, and one RBI.

Senior Bianka Molina (0-5) started the game on the mound for the Lady Eagles and received the loss after giving up six hits, five runs, all which were earned and walking one batter.

To start day two of the classic NCCU took on Northern Kentucky University where they suffered an 8-1 loss. Game three consisted of one run, three hits and two errors.

During the first inning Germ singled on a bunt to third base before Camille Hampton and Kirkland were both hit by pitches loading the bases. Freshman Jenny Tracy singled to short stop scoring Germ giving the Lady Eagles their only run of the game. Simpson also earned a hit for NCCU during the match-up to finish out the first inning.

Booker (1-5) pitched 5 innings of the seven inning game, giving up 10 hits, eight runs, six earned runs, one walk and striking out three batters.

Closing out the second day of action the Lady Eagles took on the Niagara University, falling 9-1 in a five-inning contest. NCCU collected one run, two hits and two errors during the loss. Hampton and Simpson earned the Lady Eagles collection of runs while Hampton received an RBI and Marth Batie scored NCCU’s lone run.

Booker (1-6) pitched 4.1 innings before the game was cut short by the run rule, giving up nine hits, nine runs, eight earned runs, four walks and one strike out.

The fifth and final game was a match-up between the Lady Eagles and Eastern Kentucky University. EKU shut out NCCU in five innings with a 9-0 victory. The Lady Eagles sole hit during the last game of the classic came from Tracy during the top of the fifth inning when she singled.

The rookie in the circle, Booker (1-7), pitched three innings of the last game giving up 10 hits, eight runs, all which were earned.

The Lady Eagles return to the field on Tuesday, Feb. 26 as the host the Camels from Campbell University in a doubleheader match-up at home. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., at Parkwood Athletic Field in Durham, N.C.
