Jessica Freeman (Charlotte, N.C.) and junior
Khyra Conerly (Oakland, Calif.) each earned new season-highs and combined for a total of 47 points during the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team's 76-65 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 23 inside Kimmel Arena in Asheville, N.C.
Freeman finished with a game-best 24 points, shooting 9-of-17 from the field, 1-of-4 from three point land and a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe while also contributing a team-best six assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Conerly more than tripled her season-best of seven, scoring 23 points during the Lady Eagles victory, shooting 6-of-16 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. The 5-8 guard contributed an additional seven boards, four steals, three helpers and one block.
Ja'Da Brayboy led UNCA on 6-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-8 from behind the arc, earning 16 points.
The Lady Eagles never trailed during the contest scoring immediately off of the opening tip on a basket from Freeman and continued on a 4-0 before the Bulldogs bought their first basket at the 16:38 mark.
Conerly found junior
Rachel Williams (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) on the wing with 16:02 left in the first frame knocking down the shot from behind the arc giving NCCU the 7-2 lead heading into the first media timeout.
NCCU held UNCA scoreless for the next six minutes going on a 7-0 run.
UNCA's Brittany Gwyn ended the Bulldogs drought with a three at the 9:14 mark leaving NCCU on top by nine at 14-5.
As the first half buzzer sounded sophomore
Tisha Dixon (Kinston, N.C.) finished a layup from
Tia Clement (Winston-Salem, N.C.) earning her first duce of the season and putting the Lady Eagles on top by 19 (39-20) heading into the locker room.
Starting off the second twenty minutes NCCU carried its offensive momentum from the first half back to the court as
Racquel Davis picked up a quick basket and foul, completing the three-point play and putting the Lady Eagles on top by 22.
NCCU seized its largest lead of the game at the 15:43 mark after Williams blocked shot was picked up by Freeman who complete the layup, giving the Lady Eagles a 23 point lead at 49-26.
During the last 3:32 of the contest the Lady Eagles saw their lead slip to 11 as they captured the 76-65 victory.
As a team, NCCU shot 26-of-57 from the field (45.6 percent), 3-of-8 from behind the arc (37.5%) and 21-of-28 from the free throw line while also pulling down 41 rebounds, dishing 12 assists, blocking eight shots and collecting 12 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action on Monday, Nov. 25 as they return home to take on the Runnin' Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb at 6 p.m. inside McDougald-McLendon Gym.
