A total nine hits and three runs, guided the North Carolina Central University softball team to a 2-1 victory over the Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T State University in three-game action on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6 in Greensboro, N.C., at the Lady Aggies Softball Complex, along with the 2-1 victory, NCCU fell 6-1 on Saturday and 4-0 on Sunday to conclude the 2012 regular season.

“This weekend I saw my young ladies come together and have fun playing the game of softball,” said NCCU head softball coach Theresa Stephens.

In the win, which was delayed and moved to Sunday, May 6 due to rain, maroon and gray junior Shakemia Edwards tallied one run and two hits, as freshman Martha Batie slugged two hits.  Senior Andrea Searls and sophomore Amanda Bullock each attained one run and one RBI.

“We made great contact against A&T,” said Stephens.  “With solid contact, Shaq (Shakemia) and Searls turning that contact into hits to make it on base and almost no errors in the game, we found success.”

NCCU junior Bianka Molina pitched a complete game, notching the win with four strikeouts against 27 batters, while allowing six hits and one run.

“It’s amazing the level of intensity that the NCCU versus A&T rivalry brings, but we stepped up and pulled out a win,” said Stephens.

During the first game of the series, A&T led the contest 6-0 until senior Aurora Baker whacked a homerun in the top of the seventh to silence the Aggie fans.

Baker also maintained the mound for NCCU, by pitching for 6.0 innings allowing nine hits and six runs against 25 N.C. A&T batters.

During the final game of 2012, Edwards, Molina and junior Sarah Kaiser tallied one run apiece, while Molina pitched her final complete game.  With 6.0 innings of action in the circle, Molina struck out three Lady Aggies, while allowing six hits and four runs.

NCCU concludes the season with a record of 4-45 overall and 1-13 in the conference.  Since the tournament action is only open to the top four teams from each division, the Lady Eagles will not be eligible for conference play.
