NCCU SOFTBALL COMES UP WINLESS AT THE USC UPSTATE SUBWAY SPARTAN TOURNAMENT

Nadia Jefferies Attains All-Tournament Team Honors

(www.NCCUEaglePride.com) – After dropping an 8-2 decision to the hosts Spartans of USC-Upstate on Friday, March 2 in Spartanburg, S.C., the North Carolina Central University softball team concluded the remaining two days of play with four consecutive losses in Cyrill Stadium.

In spite of their shortfalls on the field, junior Nadia Jefferies made a lasting impression as she was named to the Subway Spartan Classic All-Tournament Team.

On Saturday, March 3 the maroon and gray fell a second time to USC-Upstate, 8-0 and loss 9-1 to Appalachian State.  NCCU concluded the tournament with a pair of losses on Sunday, March 4, 18-1 against Dayton and 11-0 to Appalachian State.

In their second diamond matchup against USC-Upstate, NCCU tallied three hits and made it on base on three occasions.  Junoirs Kayla McPeek, Sarah Kaiser and Jefferies each notched one hit on two times at bat. 
Lady Eagles’ senior Aurora Baker took the loss after permitting eight hits, five earned runs and walk two batters, while striking out one Spartan against 21 batters over 4.1 innings of play.

USC-Upstate’s Ericka Harris guided the offense with two runs, two hits and three RBI on two times at bat, while Lacey Dinney attained her sixth win from the circle with six strikeouts, one walk and allowing three hits against 14 batters in 4.1 innings.

NCCU continued Saturday competition by taking on the Lady Mountaineers of Appalachian State.  The afternoon matchup marked the third meeting between ASU and NCCU this season, with ASU leading the season series 2-0.
Against Appalachian State, the Lady Eagles tallied one run, four hits and one RBI off the efforts of Kaiser.  Junior Mae’Risha Watts notched the lone run and was one-of-three Lady Eagles to tally at hit.

NCCU’s Bianka Molina held the circle during five innings of play, where she allowed 11 hits, eight earned runs and struck out four batters when facing 30 Lady Spartans.  Baker returned to the mound in the bottom of the sixth, hence allowing one hit and walking one batter.

ASU’s Caitlin Wainright gathered her second win of the season on Saturday.  In six innings at the circle, Wainright allowed the four Lady Eagles’ hits, one run and one walk, while striking out five batters against 23 Lady Eagles.
For the final day of competition on Sunday, March 4, NCCU took on Dayton and Appalachian State.

In the diamond battle against Dayton, NCCU notched four hits, one run and an RBI from sophomore Regina Diaz, as senior Nadia Moreta made it to home plate in the bottom of the third.

Molina once again opened up the pitching campaign, in 4.1 innings she allowed 11 hits 11 runs, four of which were earned runs, and struck out one batter against 24 Dayton student-athletes.  Baker relieved her and pitched for less than a full inning during which time she allowed seven runs and seven hits against 10 batters.

Dayton’s Sarah Wedel pitched a complete game for Dayton, where she was able to strike out six Lady Eagles and permit four hits.  Lauren Nacke provided the best batting outing for the Flyers during her four times at bat, where she tallied two runs, two hits and three RBI.

For their final contest of the three-day event, NCCU took on Appalachian State once more.  During their fourth meeting of the season, the Lady Eagles advanced to seven hits, despite not making any runs.

Junior McPeek found sometime in the circle for 5.1 innings of play.  McPeek allowed nine hits, two earned runs and one walk, while striking out 2-of-the-27 batters faced.  Molina relieved McPeek for 1.2 innings, where she allowed seven hits, eight runs and threw one strike out against 11 batters.

Meghan Smith led ASU with two runs, two hits and three RBI on five times at bat, as Carolina Williams dominated the circle for 6.1 innings.  Williams allow all seven of NCCU’s hits and struck out four maroon and gray batters.

NCCU drops to 1-15 on the season, as they prepare for action on March 10-11 during the Longwood Invitational in Farmville, Va.
