NCCUW vs. Hampton
DURHAM, N.C. (www.NCCUEaglePride.com) - In their last contest of the regular season, the North Carolina Central University women's basketball team suffered a 35-86 loss to the Lady Pirates of Hampton University on Thursday, March 1 in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
Maroon and gray junior Chasidy Williams finished the last home contest with a team-high 12 points and six rebounds, as solo senior Blaire Houston added six points.
Hampton commenced the contest with a 5-0 lead until Jasmine Alston scored the first NCCU basket in the paint.
The Lady Pirates continued their dominance taking a 26-point lead by the 2:15 mark.
A jumper by Tenika Neely and a pair of free throws by Williams brought the margin to 24 for a halftime score of 43-19.
Williams led the mighty maroon with eight points after 20 minutes of competition, as freshman Kabrina Truesdale tallied five points.
Continuing their first-half offensive control, HU extended its lead to 47 points. NCCU went on an 8-3 run at the 10:04 mark to bring the margin to 42.
But the defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champions would not relinquish their authority and paced to an 86-35 victory in McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
The maroon and gray was 28 percent from the field on 9-of-32 shooting, 2-of-10 from behind the arc, and 75 percent from the charity stripe, 15-of-20.
Four Lady Pirates scored in double-figures to seal the victory. Choicetta McMillian and Jericka Jenkins notched 18 points apiece, while Nicole Hamilton dropped 12 points and Alyssa Bennett finished with 10 points. Jenkins tallied seven assists and seven steals.
HU was 45 percent from the field on 35-of-78, 10-of-29 from the long range, and 100 percent from the free-throw line, 6-of-6.
NCCU drops to 3-26 on the season and 1-15 in the MEAC, while Hampton advances to 23-4 and 15-1 in the conference.
For the first time since the 2007-08, the maroon and gray have a chance at the conference title as they enter the MEAC Tournament on Monday, March 5.
